Hillcats Smack Sox in Game 1 Win

Lynchburg pounded out a season-best nine runs and a season-high 17 hits en route to a game one win over Salem at Lewis-Gale Field.

The Hillcats started the scoring early with a three-run first inning. Dave Sappelt had the big hit in the inning, a two-run double to make it 3-0.

Salem responded with a two-run bottom of the first inning to pull within a run. In the second inning the Red Sox tacked on another run to tie the game at three in the second.

In the fourth inning the Cats plated a run on a wild pitch to take the lead at 4-3. Salem though would come back again with a run in the bottom of the fourth on the solo shot by Oscar Tejeda and the game was knotted up at four a piece.

Again Lynchburg would regain the advantage in the fifth inning at 5-4 when Jose Gualdron smacked an RBI single, one of three hits the infielder had on the night. In the sixth inning Josh Fellhauer knocked in another run with a single to make it a 6-4 game.

Salem pulled back within a run with a run in the sixth inning but they would get no closer. The Cats plated two more runs in the seventh inning and another in the eighth on their way to the series opening victory.

Jordan Hotchkiss (1-0) got the victory for Lynchburg (5-6) and Michael Lee (1-1) took the loss for Salem (8-3). Game two of the four-game series takes place on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. back at Lewis Gale Field. Right-hander Curtis Partch (1-1, 1.80) will ge the start for the Cats opposite lefty Fabian Williamson (2-0, 0.90) for the Sox.
