Salem Red Sox News Release
Salem, VA (April 19, 2010) - Lynchburg scored a season-high nine runs on a season-high 17 hits to hand Salem its first home loss, taking down the Red Sox 9-5 on Monday evening at Lewis-Gale Field. The Red Sox rallied to tie from early 3-0 and 4-3 deficits, but never led as the Hillcats scored in six different innings. Josh Fellhauer, Dave Sappelt, and Jose Gauldron each had three hits for the Hillcats as they improved to 5-6, while the Red Sox fell to 8-3 as their four-game winning streak was snapped.
The Hillcats jumped on the Sox very early as six of their first seven batters reached in the top of the first inning against Salem starter Brock Huntzinger. Cody Puckett and Sappelt each drilled RBI doubles, sending Lynchburg to a 3-0 lead after half an inning. Salem responded with an immediate pair to get back within one, and then tied it up with one in the third. Anthony Rizzo, Ryan Lavarnway, and Peter Hissey each drove in a run for the Sox to make it 3-3 after two. Five days after getting no-hit through six innings against lefthander Matt Fairel, the Sox scored four times on six hits against Fairel in four innings, but the lefty received a no decision.
Each team added one more run in the fourth, with Lynchburg's Miguel Rojas scoring on a wild pitch before Salem's Oscar Tejeda driving his second home run in as many games over the left field wall. Tejeda's solo shot made it all square again at 4-4.
But from the fifth inning on, the majority of the offense belonged to the Hillcats. With both starters knocked out after four innings, the Lynchburg bullpen surrendered just one run over the final five frames, while Lynchburg scored one each in the fifth and sixth, two in the seventh, and one more in the eighth to total their season-best nine runs.
Trailing 8-5 in the seventh, the Red Sox found a golden opportunity to get back in the game when they loaded the bases with one out for Ryan Lavarnway. But the Red Sox DH, who went 0-4 with an RBI to snap his five-game hitting streak, popped out to shallow right. The next batter, Will Middlebrooks, chopped the first pitch right to the pitcher and was thrown out to end the threat.
Salem mustered just one baserunner over the final two innings.
Jordan Hotchkiss earned the win with two hitless innings of relief for the Hillcats, while Michael Lee suffered the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits in three frames out of the Red Sox pen.
Salem and Lynchburg, having split the first four games of the season against each other, resume their matchup with game two of this four-game set on Tuesday night at 7:05. Fabian Williamson seeks a 3-0 start to his season for the Sox, while Curtis Partch gets the call for the Cats.
