Late-Inning Offense Leads Frederick to Another Win

April 19, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release

Once again the Keys opened up a close game late as RF Ronnie Welty's third home run of the season broke a 4-4 seventh inning tie spring-boarding the Keys to an 8-5 win in its series opener in Potomac. For Frederick it is the Keys third win in a row, an accomplishment they have achieved for a second time in the first two weeks of the season.

The Keys trailed 2-0 through an inning but quickly rallied as 3B Buck Britton, DH Jacob Julius and C Brian Ward reached to load the bases with no one out in the second inning. Frederick would plate three runs in the frame, highlighted by CF Xavier Avery's two-run single.

1B Joe Mahoney would extend upon the Keys lead with a solo home run down the right field line putting the Keys atop 4-2. It was Mahoney's second home run of the season.

Two unearned runs would even the game at 4-4 entering the late innings.

But that is where Frederick has made hay. The Keys had outscored the opposition 22-5 from the seventh inning on entering the night.

After Welty's home run gave the Keys the lead, Potomac rallied. With a run home and runners at the corners, Nationals 3B Tim Pahuta lined a ball towards the left-center field alley. Over came LF Kyle Hudson who made a tremendous diving grab, saving the lead for Frederick.

Reliever Sean Gleason worked three scoreless innings for the save.

The Keys now play a morning game Tuesday with Ryan O'Shea on the hill for the 10:30 a.m. start. The Keys return home Friday Night for the first ever Going Green Night presented by the Frederick County Department of Solid Waste and Bryant.
