April 19, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release

Five Keys posted multiple hits in an 8-5 win over the Potomac Nationals Monday night at Pfitzner Stadium. Potomac starter Marcos Frias allowed four runs on five hits in six innings, but it was Clayton Dill (0-3) who was charged with the loss after surrendering four runs on four hits in one and a third.

Frederick's lineup peppered P-Nat arms for 11 hits in the contest. Xavier Avery, Kyle Hudson, Joe Mahoney, L.J. Britton and Mike Mooney each recorded two hits on the night.

The Nationals nine didn't fare much worse. Michael Burgess was 2-for-4 with a run and Brian Peacock was 2-for-5 with a run to continue his hot start. Peacock is batting .342 (13-38) with a team-best seven RBI.

The Nationals got on the board first Monday as Peacock started things off with a one-out double in the bottom of the first. Burgess followed with a single to right, then Peacock scored on a wild pitch. Dan Nelson later drove in Burgess from second with a ground-ball single up the middle.

But the Keys came right back in the top of the next frame. Buck Britton led off with a single off Frias, Jacob Julius took first after being hit by a pitch, then Frias walked Brian Ward to load the bases. Britton scored on a Mike Mooney RBI groundout to the third baseman, and Xavier Avery gave the Keys a 3-2 lead with a two-run single on a liner to left field.

Mohoney led off the third with his second hit of the night, a towering blast over the wall in left field to extend the Frederick lead to 4-2.

The P-Nats later came back to tie the game in the fourth with two unearned runs off Keys starter Rick Zagone. Nelson was the first P-Nat to reach base with a one-out walk. A fielding error by Frederick shortstop Mike Mooney - the first of three Frederick errors - put Jacobsen on first and Nelson on second. With two outs, Francisco Plasencia singled to score Nelson, and Jacobsen also scored from first on a throwing error by the right fielder.

The tie was finally broken in the top of the seventh inning as Ronnie Welty hit a two-run shot to left.

Potomac threatened to retake the lead in the bottom of the frame. Steve Lombardozzi led off with a walk, then Peacock and Burgess each singled off Frederick reliever Brett Bordes to load the bases for Tyler Moore. Sean Gleason took over for Bordes with the bases loaded and nobody out and was able to get out of the jam with minimal damage.

After Moore grounded into an RBI-fielder's choice at third, Gleason was able to get Nelson to ground out to short and Tim Pahuta to line out to left.

That marked the end of Potomac's scoring for the night as Gleason earned his second save of the young season.

Frederick added a pair of insurance runs in the eight to make it 8-5.

The P-Nats and Keys face off again Tuesday at The Pfitz 10:30 a.m. Potomac right-hander Brad Peacock will take on Frederick righty Ryan O'Shea.

Tuesday is Middle School Science Day, presented by PRTC OmniRide and SOAR at Home. Students from Prince William County Public Schools will spend the morning at the ballpark learning about Newton's Laws of Motion as they apply to the game of baseball. Sure beats physics class!
