Frederick Keys News Release

The opening game between the Frederick Keys and the Lynchburg Hillcats saw a lot of offense, some sloppy defense, and extra innings. The only way tonight's game could've been any more different is if Frederick would have won. The Hillcats defeated the Keys 2-1.

Frederick RHP Tim Bascom and Lynchburg RHP Ronald Uviedo ended up in a pitcher's duel. The Keys struck the first blow in the bottom of the first. CF Matt Angle led off the inning with a walk. LF David Cash then doubled to right field, putting runners on second and third with nobody out. 3B Tyler Henson grounded out to second, knocking in Angle, and giving the Keys a 1-0 lead.

That's the only run Uviedo would surrender in the contest. After allowing Angle and Cash to reach, Uviedo retired the next 11 batters he faced. He allowed just the one run over five innings of work, while striking out seven.

The Hillcats tied the game in the second. 1B Matt Hague led off the inning with a double. C Kris Watts knocked him in with an RBI-single, to knot it up at one.

The game stayed tied all the way to the sixth. Lynchburg RF Maiko Loyola led off the frame with a walk. He then stole second base. SS Jordy Mercer knocked him in with a double, to give the Hillcats a 2-1 lead.

The one run ended up being enough. Lynchburg relievers RHP Chris Cullen and RHP Michael Dubee combined to pitch the final four innings. Together, they allowed just one hit, no walks, and struck out four.

Uviedo got the win, improving his record to 2-1. Bascom took the tough-luck loss. The right-hander allowed just the two runs on five hits over seven strong innings of work. He's now 3-4. Dubee picked up his third save of the season.

The Keys and the Hillcats will meet in game three of a four-game set tomorrow night at Harry Grove Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00. For ticket info, contact our box office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS.
