Carter, Dash take down Pelicans, 5-3

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Pelicans took an early lead but couldn't make it hold up as the Dash plated four off Pelican starter Jeff Locke in the bottom of the second which proved to be all they needed as the Pelicans fell Tuesday night 5-3.

The Pelicans struck with a run in the top of the first capitalizing on a leadoff walk to Cole Miles who stole second then scored on a Cody Johnson single off Dash starter Anthony Carter.

Locke allowed the first four to reach in the second, including a single by Salvador Sanchez, a walk to Brent Morel, Christian Marrero reached on an error and Lee Cruz doubled. The error allowed Sanchez to score then Morel scored on the double by Cruz and both Marrero and Cruz scored on a base hit by C.J. Lang. Locke (1-3) took the loss going four innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits while walking four and striking out five.

The game stayed 4-1 until the Dash added a run off Lee Hyde in the fifth. Jimmy Gallagher singled to open the inning and scored from third on a Marrero double to put the Dash up 5-1.

Myrtle Beach got on the board again in the sixth when Chad Lundahl, who reached on an error, scored on a Robert Marcial single. The unearned run would be the final run that Carter (3-3) would allow as he got the win allowing just one earned run on four hits over seven innings. He also struck out nine, which is a new season high for Dash pitchers.

The Pelicans got their final run in the ninth on a solo home run by Johnson to leadoff the inning off Santo Luis. It wasn't enough as the Birds fell 5-3 evening the series at one. Luis (5) pitched the final two innings for the Dash to earn the save.

The series continues tomorrow as the Pelicans send right hander Erik Cordier to the mound against righty Charlie Shirek. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 at Wake Forest Baseball Park in Winston-Salem, NC.
