Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Winston-Salem, NC - Winston-Salem starting pitcher Anthony Carter was superb on the hill in leading the Dash past Myrtle Beach 5-2 on Tuesday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Carter tossed seven innings and held the Pelicans to two runs (one earned) on four hits. He also struck out nine, which is a season-high for the Dash.
The Pelicans snared an early lead with a run off Carter in the first inning. Cole Miles walked to leadoff and stole second base. Two outs later, Cody Johnson delivered an RBI single that scored Miles.
The Dash answered with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Center fielder Salvador Sanchez led off with a single and Brent Morel walked. Next, Christian Marrero hit a slow roller to second base that was fielded cleanly by Michael Fisher. But his throw to first was off-target and pulled the first baseman off the bag. On the play, Sanchez scored from second to knot the score at one. Left fielder Lee Cruz followed with an RBI double and designated hitter C.J. Lang added a two-run single later in the inning to give Winston-Salem a 4-1 lead.
The Dash added a run in the fifth inning when first baseman Jimmy Gallagher singled off Pelicans reliever Lee Hyde and right fielder Christian Marrero contributed a run-scoring double to extend Winston-Salem's lead to 5-1. Myrtle Beach put an unearned run in the sixth inning when Chad Lundahl reached on an error and eventually scored on a Jason Heyward ground out.
Cody Johnson tacked on a solo home run off Dash reliever Santo Luis in the ninth inning to finalize the scoring. Luis worked the final two innings to collect his fifth save of the season. Locke (1-3) allowed four runs on four hits with four walks in four innings to suffer the loss.
The Dash will continue their seven-game home stand on Wednesday afternoon with game three of this four-game series against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans at 12 p.m. at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Winston-Salem will start RHP Charlie Shirek (6-0, 3.27), while Myrtle Beach is expected to turn to RHP Erik Cordier (0-1, 1.69).
Single-game tickets are also available for games at Wake Forest Baseball Park through June 17 and can be purchased online at www.wsdash.com or by calling the Dash office at (336) 714-2287.
