Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH S.C. - Each of the first three games of the series was close at least until the late innings until tonight when the Lynchburg Hillcats (29-30) pounded the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (29-31), 8-2. The Pelicans allowed a season-high 17 hits and the Hillcats cruised to victory in the series finale, winning the series three games to one. Myrtle Beach starter Kelvin Villa had not allowed a run in 12 straight innings and had only given up six hits in those 12 frames before tonight's game, but the Hillcats figured out the 20-year-old lefty from the Dominican and snapped his two-game winning streak.
Lynchburg began their offensive attack in the top of the 2nd inning when they staked claim to an early lead. After C Neil Walker reached on an error, RF Brad Correll slapped a double into left-centerfield to bring in Walker. Correll later scored on an RBI single off the bat of 3B Vince Rooi, which made the score 2-0 in favor of the visitors.
In the top of the 4th the Cats added on to their lead with two more runs. Back-to-back singles from 1B Steven Pearce and Walker, followed by a walk drawn by DH Brad Rea loaded the sacks. Rooi would then drive in his second run of the night with a deep fly ball to centerfield, a sacrifice fly, scoring Pearce from third to give the Hillcats a 3-0 advantage. An RBI single into right field from 2B Dan Schwartzbauer pushed another run across, making it 4-0.
An inning later the Hillcats pulled away thanks to a big four run frame. The Cats knocked four run-scoring singles to extend their lead, as Walker, Correll, Rea, and Schwartzbauer each collected an RBI base hit in the inning, which jumped the lead to 8-0.
Myrtle Beach made an attempt at a late comeback, pushing two runs across in the bottom of the 8th inning to bring some excitement to Coastal Federal Field. The Birds broke up the shut out thanks to an RBI base hit through the right side of the infield on the ground by 1B Greg Creek, which plated 3B Van Pope, who doubled with one down to reach. The Pelicans manufactured another run courtesy of an RBI single up the middle from RF Steven Doetsch, bringing Creek across to make the score 8-2, which is how it would end.
Pelicans starter Kelvin Villa (L, 3-2) last was roughed up for eight runs on 14 hits, the most he has allowed this season. Reliever Brad Nelson made his Carolina League debut and tossed 4.2 scoreless innings out of the pen. He allowed three scattered hits, walked one and fanned one. Lynchburg starter Kyle Bloom (W, 3-4) earned the win after slinging six shut out innings. Bloom yielded just four hits, walked five and struck out four.
The Pelicans were led offensively by Pope who went 2-4 with a pair of doubles and scored a run. Creek also went 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Doetsch notched a 2-4 effort and drove in a run.
On Thursday night the Pelicans travel to Kinston, North Carolina to take on the K-Tribe in game one of a four-game series against their archrivals.
