Whisler outshines Patterson
June 7, 2006 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release
Woodbridge, Va. - John Patterson arrived on the field before the game to much pomp and circumstance from the crowd. With "Thunderstruck" blaring from the P. A. system, the right-hander from Orange, Texas, wowed the crowd and Winston-Salem batters for an inning before the visitors caught up and eventually scraped across a pair of runs en route to a 4-1 win on Wednesday.
Patterson threw 54 pitches in 3 1/3 innings of work, striking out four and not allowing an earned run on four hits. Two runs did score against Patterson, one in the second and one in the third.
David Cook reached on a two-out error by Ian Desmond, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch then scored on a single to right by Jose de los Santos.
The run in the third was the result of a controversial play when, with two outs Chris Kelly popped a double down the right field line that caused much dismay. The ball, according to several players and the fans in the stands, landed foul however the home plate umpire ruled it a fair ball and Garrett Guest scored with the second run of the game.
The Nationals only run would come in the third, Desmond made up for his earlier blunder when he grounded out but scored Ender Chavez.
Rog Bernadina had a good night at the plate for the Nationals, going 3-for-4 with three singles.
Wes Whisler silenced the Nationals the rest of the way allowing just a single run in eight innings of work. He struck out three and allowed six hits to improve to 6-4 on the season.
The Nationals now hit the road to take on the Frederick Keys for the next four days before coming home for the stretch run to end the first half. The Nationals will now only face Northern Division opponents with eight games against Frederick and three against Wilmington.
