Frederick Keys News Release

Salem, VA -- The Keys fell for the seventh time in eight games, as the Keys could not mount an offensive threat after the fourth inning to fall, 5-2 to the Salem Avalanche on Wednesday night.

The Keys scored first in the top of the second inning when Salem starter Evan Englebrook walked Bryan Bass with the bases loaded to score Dustin Yount.

But Lou Santangelo would quickly tie the score in the bottom of the inning with a lead-off home run off David Haehnel to left center field. In the third inning Beau Torbert and Neil Sellers hit consecutive RBI singles to widen the game to two runs.

Rory Shortell would walk in another run in the fourth inning. This time Travis Brown would draw the walk to allow Jason Fransz to cross the plate, pulling the Keys within a run.

Salem proved to be too opportunistic, as Santangelo scored in the fifth inning on a fielding error from Dustin Yount. In the eighth inning the Avalanche added another run, as Matthew Cunningham reached on an error and eventually came home to score on an Ervin Alcantara single to seal Salem's 5-2 win.

Haehnel (0-3) still winless on the season allowed three runs on six hits over 4.0 innings. Rommie Lewis made his first appearance with the Keys since 2004, tossing 4.0 innings, allowing two runs, both unearned on four hits.

Shortell (3-3) would earn the victory tossing 3.1 innings of one hit ball, allowing no runs and walking two. Rodrigo Escobar came on to get the last four outs, allowing one hit to earn his 11th save.

The Keys travel to Frederick to play host to the Potomac Nationals at 7:00 PM on Thursday evening. RHP Radhames Liz will take the mound for the Keys.

Thursday is also Super Heroes Night presented by Beyond Comics, where fans dressing as their favorite super heroes will receive $2 off the purchase of a general admission ticket.
