Hershey Bears News Release

The Hershey Bears Hockey Club picked up three of a possible six points over the weekend. The team enters the new week in second place in the East Division and in seventh place in the Eastern Conference.

On the team's first short trip to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Hershey skated out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Jon Landry and Casey Wellman. Philipp Grubauer kept the Penguins off of the score sheet with numerous spectacular saves, until the hosts finally solved him near the halfway point of the third period. Taylor Chorney scored on an individual effort to give the Penguins life, and with the clock down under one minute remaining and goaltender Matt Murray sitting for an extra attacker, another Chorney shot banked off of Jayson Megna and past Grubauer for a tie score. In overtime, Megna collected a backhanded pass from Derrick Pouliot and beat a lunging Grubauer for the winner.

On Saturday back in the comfort of home, Hershey hosted the Hartford Wolf Pack in the first of a two-game weekend set. This time, the Bears' opponent took a 2-0 lead into the third period, on goals by Oscar Lindberg and J.T. Miller. At 10:07 of the third, Hershey got on the board when Chris Brown's shot deflected off of a Hartford defenseman and behind goaltender Cedrick Desjardins. After just 66 more seconds passed, Connor Carrick carried the puck into the Pack zone and let a low shot go that squeezed through Desjardins, tying the game. The AHL's leading scorer then took over to complete the comeback. Kris Newbury parked at the net front and got his stick on a Wellman slap shot, tipping it home with 3:18 remaining in regulation. He later added an empty-net tally to seal a 4-2 victory.

In Sunday's rematch against the Pack, Hartford was able to erase deficits of 1-0 and 2-1, skate to a 3-2 lead and then protect it during a furious late rally by Hershey. Carrick struck again on the weekend, scoring a goal in a four-on-four situation just 2:34 into the game. After Lindberg tallied to tie the game, Nathan Walker scored his first of the season by deflecting an Erik Burgdoerfer point shot behind goaltender Mackenzie Skapski. The rookie netminder did not make his first save until early in the second period, as the Pack held the Bears to just two shots on goal in the first - with both shots turning into goals. But Skapski would stop the next 22, and with Chris Bourque and Lindberg adding the next goals, the visitors salvaged the win. Hershey pulled Pheonix Copley in favor of a fifth attacker late, and then get Dustin Gazley out of the penalty box to create a six-on-four chance with ten seconds left.

HERSHEY BEARS NEWS AND NOTES

WHAT ELSE IS NEW?: C Kris Newbury saw his eight-game point streak snapped on Sunday, which ended one off of the AHL's season high. But the veteran center still leads the AHL in scoring with 18 points (8-10-18) thanks to an assist on Friday at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and a two-goal, first-star performance on Saturday vs. Hartford. Newbury is tied for third in goals, tied for fifth in assists, and tied for fourth in power-play assists (five). The native of Brampton, Ontario is now just 25 games shy of 700 in his AHL career. He still holds the league's longest road point streak of the season (five games, six points).

WELL POWER: RW Casey Wellman is tied for the AHL lead in power-play goals (five), and his eight total goals rank tied with teammate Kris Newbury for third in the league.

HE'S A PLUS: D Jon Landry has accumulated a plus-minus efficiency of plus- ten, which ranks tied for third among AHL defensemen and tied for fourth overall.

LET HIM HELP: Offensive-minded defenseman Tomas Kundratek picked up a power play assist on Saturday night's win over Hartford, to remain tied in the power-play assist lead (five) among AHL defensemen and in sole possession of the league lead in assists among defensemen (11). His point total (0-11-11) ranks tied for third among defensemen.

GIANT GRUBAUER: G Philipp Grubauer picked up his fourth win of the season on Saturday vs. Hartford, a 28-save effort. In his last five starts, the native of Rosenheim, Germany is 3-1-1 with a goals-against average of 1.50, a save percentage of .939 and one shutout.

"O" FROM THE "D": Hershey's defensemen have been chipping in remarkably on offense. At least one Bears defenseman has found the score sheet in all by one of the season's games played - the club's 3-1 loss to Manchester on November 2 - and Bears blueliners have a total of 38 combined points (seven goals, 31 assists) through 13 games, with three more (1-2-3) coming last night vs. Hartford.

OUT OF THE GATE: - The Bears have scored the game's first goal in 10 of their 13 games this season. Hershey leads the AHL in first-goals.
