Lancaster Stormers News Release
Aaron Herr homered and drove in two runs on Monday evening, reaching a franchise record 100 RBI on the season, but the Lancaster Barnstormers fell, 12-5, to the Newark Bears in front of 4,007 at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Herr reached Derek Blacksher (2-5) for a leadoff homer in the second to tie the mark set by Ryan Minor in 2005 then broke it with an RBI single on a sinking liner to right field that scored Bryant Nelson from second in the eighth. The Lancaster third baseman also doubled in the sixth inning to move within one two-bagger of Michael Woods' franchise record.
Nelson also homered and doubled for Lancaster.
However, the night otherwise belonged to the Bears. Josh Hall (13-6) found immediate trouble in the first inning, walking Tim Raines, Jr. on an extended at bat. Kennard Jones had appeared to ground into a double play, but Bryant Nelson's throw to first came out of the setting sun and was dropped by Ryan Mulhern. Then, Hall got Jones leaving too soon, but Mulhern again dropped the throw as Jones motored to second. Brian Barton followed with a single into center and stole second before Carl Everett unloaded his 15th homer of the season, clearing the tents in right field for a 3-0 lead.
A fourth Newark run crossed in the second as Raines sprinted around from second on a bad throw by Lloyd Turner.
The homers by Herr and Nelson carved the lead down to two heading into the seventh, but Hall faded. The right-hander walked Randy Gress and Jones. Barton followed with a two-run double cracked off the fence in left center. Lancaster opted to walk Everett intentionally, then both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Eric Munson made it 7-2 with a sacrifice fly to left, and Manny Mejia brought in another with a ground single up the middle. A fifth run scored on a bad throw.
Four singles off reliever Austin Hinkle produced three more runs for Newark in the eighth.
The Bears stuck with Blacksher who went the distance, yielding nine hits and the five runs all earned. The right-hander walked three and struck out four.
Lancaster will host Newark again on Tuesday evening. Jose Sanchez (6-11) will face left Kelvin Villa (3-9) in the 6:30 contest.
