Barnstormers Eliminated On Controversial Call

September 13, 2010 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

Lancaster's bid for a playoff spot in 2010 came to a bizarre end on Sunday evening on a controversial home run call in the bottom of the 10th as York walked off with a 9-8 victory in the series finale at Sovereign Bank Stadium.

Vince Harrison, batting with two outs and nobody aboard, lifted a fly ball to deep right. Michael Woods went back toward the wall, and the ball disappeared from view. First base umpire Andrew Vincent signaled home run, and the Revs began to celebrate. Meanwhile, Woods pointed at an opening in the right field wall, claiming that the ball had slipped through a crack in the doorway that leads to the home clubhouse. First baseman Ryan Mulhern, second baseman Lloyd Turner, center fielder Joe Gaetti and manager Tom Herr joined in the argument to no avail.

The Barnstormers had soared to a 7-2 lead in the third inning. With the club down, 2-1, Lloyd Turner lined a single that just cleared second baseman Liu Rodriguez.. One out later, Bryant Nelson banged a single into left center, and Aaron Herr drilled a single to left to drive in the tying run. Reggie Taylor ripped another RBI single into right center. A roller down the third base line was beaten out by Ryan Mulhern to load the bases. Adam Witter belted a three-run double into left center for a 6-2 lead. Witter scored on a rolling single into right by Octavio Martinez to cap the six-run frame.

York, which averaged nearly nine runs per game in the season series, fought back. The Revolution loaded the bags in the fourth off Rick Bauer and scored once on a deep sacrifice fly to right by Liu Rodriguez.

The fifth inning got worse. Bauer cancelled a leadoff walk with a double play but never got another out. The right-hander walked Ian Bladergroen and allowed a single up the middle by Erold Andrus. Joel Collins walked to load the bases. Chuck Jeroloman fell behind in the count at 1-2 but worked it back to full before floating a two-run single to center. Scott Grimes was hit by a pitch for the 23rd time on the season to refill the sacks.

Lancaster went to Pat Overholt, who promptly surrendered a base-clearing double down the right field line by Rodriguez as York snatched an 8-7 lead.

Joe Gaetti beat an overly exaggerated shift by rolling a one-out single into right in the top of the sixth. Bryant Nelson walked to add a second runner. Herr punched a single into right, scoring Gaetti to tie the game. As the ball bounced away from Collins at the plate, Nelson took off for third. Collins threw him out, and the Barnstormers never got another runner.

Lancaster returns home on Monday to face the Newark Bears. Josh Hall (13-5) will take the hill for Lancaster against Derek Blacksher (1-5) in the 6:30 start.

NOTES: Herr closed to within one of the franchise record with his 98th RBI...L.J. Biernbaum homered in the first inning, the 70th of his Atlantic League career...Martinez extended his hitting streak to nine...The Barnstormers finished the road with a 32-38 record and ended the season with a 4-16 mark against York...Lancaster dropped its fifth straight extra-inning game...Shanks set the record for most RBI in a season against Lancaster with 27 and tied the mark for most hits with 34...Grimes scored 29 times in the season series, also a record.
