Durham Bulls News Release
Durham, NC - The Durham's eighth and ninth hitters, Michel Hernandez and Elliot Johnson, combined to go four-for-seven and drive in five runs as the Bulls downed the Norfolk Tides 7-2, on Tuesday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Norfolk starter RHP Andy Mitchell (7-4) ran into trouble in the bottom of the fifth inning with the game tied at two. Justin Ruggiano reached on a grounder misplayed by Cesar Crespo, Chris Richard was hit by a pitch, and Jorge Cantu walked to load the bases. RHP Victor Moreno then relieved Mitchell, but he allowed four runs to score and Hernandez singled to drive home Ruggiano and Richard, and Johnson doubled to score Cantu and Hernandez to make the game 6-2. The Bulls padded their lead in the eighth inning when Cantu drew a bases loaded walk to score Johnson.
Norfolk had taken a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Mike Cervenak and Terry Tiffee led the inning off with back-to-back home runs, but the Bulls cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the inning when Hernandez hit an RBI-single to score Jon Weber, who was making his first appearance with the Bulls at the DBAP. Weber then hit his first home run in the ballpark to tie the game at two in the fourth inning.
RHP Tony Peguero (2-3) had his longest outing of the year, throwing six innings and surrendering just the two home runs, a total of six hits, and one walk while striking out one. Mitchell did not fair as well, working four-plus innings and getting charged with five runs (two earned) on four hits, one walk, and four hit batsmen while striking out three. LHP Jeff Ridgway relieved Peguero and pitched two scoreless innings with four strikeouts and a walk, and RHP Chad Orvella finished the game by retiring the side in the ninth inning.
The Bulls and Tides will meet again on Wednesday night at 7 PM at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. For tickets, go to www.durhambulls.com or call the box office at (919) 956-BULL.
