Charlotte Knights News Release
(Fort Mill, SC) -- The Charlotte Knights came home Monday night to start an eight-game homestand after a 13-game, 14-day road trip. A big Toledo fifth inning was their undoing as they fell 6-1 in the first game of the series to the Mud Hens. Toledo scored all their runs in the inning.
Nestor Molina made his Knights debut after being called up earlier in the day from Double-A Birmingham. He replaced Charlotte's scheduled starter Eric Stults, who had his contract purchased by the Chicago White Sox. Stults started for the White Sox in game two of their doubleheader on Monday.
Molina retired the side in order in the first inning, striking out two, and he did not allow a run through four innings.
In the fifth, however, Molina (0-1, 13.50) ran into trouble. Audy Ciriaco led off the inning with a high solo-home run over the left field wall and Toledo had a 1-0 lead.
Five batters later, the real damage was done by Ryan Strieby, who hit a grand slam down the left field line to make it 6-0 Toledo. Molina's final line in his Knights debut was four-plus innings, nine hits, six runs, one walk and four strikeouts.
The Charlotte bullpen, composed of Deunte Heath, Leyson Septimo and Donnie Veal, followed with five innings of shut-out ball.
Charlotte (15-16) got on the board in the seventh when Dan Johnson's double to dead center scored Greg Golson from first. Johnson stayed hot as he was 2-3 with two walks to reach base four times on the night. Golson reached base twice and scored the only run.
The second game of the series from Knights Stadium is Tuesday night at 7:15 p.m. Charlie Shirek (3-2, 4.41) will take the mound for Charlotte and will be opposed by left-hander Casey Crosby (3-2, 4.56) for the Hens. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday and single-game tickets for all games on the homestand are available at the Knights Ticket Office located at Knights Stadium, online at www.charlotteknights.com, or by phone at 704-357-8071 (North Carolina) or 803-548-8050.
