RHP DARYL THOMPSON (1-2, 3.60) vs. RHP DAISUKE MATSUZAKA (NR)
ON THE RHODE: The Rochester Red Wings tonight begin their first of 5 season-long 8-game roadtrips with the first of 4 at the Pawtucket Red Sox. Following 4 in Rhode Island, the Wings will return to the Empire State for a 4-game set at Syracuse (Nationals). Then it's back home for 8 against Louisville (Reds) and Gwinnett (Braves) May 15-22, including the nationally-televised May 22 game on MLB Network.
RECORD-SETTING DAY: Rochester 's Frontier Field yesterday set an attendance record for a regular-season baseball game with 13,584 at the PawSox-Empire State Yankees game featuring Yankees lefthander Andy Pettitte. The game, which was originally scheduled to be played in nearby Batavia, was officially a sellout. There has been only one baseball crowd larger than yesterday's, a July 10, 1997 exhibition contest featuring the Red Wings and their parent club at the time, the Baltimore Orioles. That game saw 13,723 come through the turnstiles.
BASEBALL MONTH IN ROCHESTER: The Red Wings and Monroe County have proclaimed May as "Baseball Month in Rochester." Frontier Field is hosting games on 26 of the 31 days in the month, as the Empire State Yankees use the downtown ballpark as a temporary home while PNC Field in Moosic, PA undergoes a season-long renovation. Tonight at the ballpark for the Yankees-Columbus Clippers game:
a Hosted organization in suite: Rochester Press-Radio Club, which has been supporting children's charities since 1949
a Spikes and Mittsy appearance: Walk through downtown Rochester
a Raffle items: Rochester Americans T.J. Brennan and Paul Szczechura autographed bat used during batting practice last week, Travis Hafner autographed baseball, Justin Masterson autographed baseball, Ben Revere autographed baseball, Dellin Betances autographed baseball
a A resounding $1,288 was raised at yesterday's raffle, bringing the month-long total to $2,859. All money raised will benefit the not-for-profit organizations being hosted in the suites.
ROSTER NEWS: Red Wings outfielder Joe Benson today was transferred to Double-A New Britain. In addition, the Wings today received infielder Pedro Florimon from New Britain. Righthander Liam Hendriks (optioned) and outfielder Clete Thomas (designated for assignment) today joined the Wings from the Minnesota Twins as well.
a Benson hit .179 with 2 homers, 8 RBI, and a team-high 27 strikeouts in 28 games. The 24-year-old entered the season as the Twins' No. 2 prospect according to Baseball America .
a There have been 30 players who have appeared in at least one game for the Red Wings, including 16 position players and 14 pitchers. The players on the roster who have yet to appear in a game are Sean Burroughs, Pedro Florimon, Liam Hendriks, and Clete Thomas. Hendriks is scheduled to start tomorrow's game, becoming the 9th different starter used by the club.
THE STRIVE FOR FIVE: The Red Wings have won a season-high 4 games in a row, the club's longest winning streak since a 5-gamer August 10-14, 2010 (streak started with the 2nd game of a doubleheader on August 10). The 4-game tear is the longest current winning streak in the International League.
QUICK RECAP: The Red Wings swept a doubleheader vs. Buffalo (Mets) Saturday before taking yesterday off. The doubleheader sweep was Rochester's first at Frontier Field since July 22, 2009, when it defeated Pawtucket 5-0 and 6-1. Rochester's 5-0 win in the 2nd game of its doubleheader vs. Buffalo Saturday was its largest winning margin of the year. In fact, it was the Red Wings' largest winning margin since an 11-3 triumph at Durham (Rays) August 10, 2011.
LET'S RE-LIVE THAT OPENING DAY MAGIC: Since scoring a season-high 7 runs on Opening Day, April 5 at Syracuse, the Red Wings have been held to 5 runs or less in each of their last 28 games. In the 6 contests they've scored at least 5 runs, the Wings are 5-1. They are 8-15 in their other 23 games.
a The Red Wings have scored an International League-low 88 runs, 21 fewer than the next closest team: Durham with 109. The league leader is Toledo (Tigers), which has plated 150 runs.
D'OH!!: The Red Wings have gone a season-high 7 straight games without a home run. Rochester's last homer came from Joe Benson on April 28 in a 4-3 loss at Buffalo. Despite the drought, the Wings are 4-3 in the last 7 games.
a The Red Wings last went 7 games in a row without a homer during an 8-game drought May 24-June 1, 2010. The team went 2-6 during that stretch, which ended when Brock Peterson homered June 2 vs. Norfolk (Orioles) of Troy Patton.
a The Red Wings have hit a league-low 10 homers, one fewer than the next closest teams Durham and Indianapolis (Pirates) with 11.
PITCHING IN: The Red Wings pitching staff has posted 2 shutouts in the last 3 games, allowing just one run in 23.0 innings in that span. Rochester's 3-0 shutout against Empire State on Friday was their first at Frontier Field since a combined no-hitter July 7, 2011, a 7-0 victory vs. Lehigh Valley (Phillies).
a The Red Wings have a 1.13 ERA (4 ER/32.0 IP) during their 4-game winning streak and an IL-best 2.06 ERA (11 ER/48.0 IP) in 6 games in May. Rochester ranks 5th in the league overall with a 3.41 ERA.
a Red Wings starting pitchers have a 2.08 ERA in May (7 ER/30.1 IP). P.J. Walters tossed the club's first complete game, albeit a 7-inning effort in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader vs. Buffalo.
