International League Names Players of the Week

May 7, 2012 - International League (IL1) News Release

The International League announced today that Gwinnett outfielder Stefan Gartrell and Lehigh Valley pitcher Scott Elarton have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from April 30-May 6. The IronPigs become the first club this season to pick up a second IL weekly award (Tyler Cloyd, April 5-8).

STEFAN GARTRELL, Gwinnett Braves IL BATTER OF THE WEEK

After a disappointing beginning to his 2012 season, former International League All-Star Stefan Gartrell broke out of his slump over his last five games to earn Batter of the Week honors. Gartrell led the League with three home runs, eight RBI, 17 total bases, and an .850 slugging percentage to go along with a .400 batting average for the week. Gartrell entered the week hitting just .165 with one homer and eight RBI over his first 22 games. Then after a rainout Monday, Gartrell opened his week with a season-high three hit effort in a 7-4 victory at Columbus. It was also the first of three straight games in which he went deep. Gartrell is now tied for his team's lead in home runs and is 2nd in RBI for the season.

28-year-old Stefan Gartrell is in his seventh season as a professional player. Last season with Gwinnett he was both a mid-season and post-season International League All-Star, as well as the champion of the 2011 Triple-A Home Run Derby. Gartrell is a native of San Francisco, California.

SCOTT ELARTON, Lehigh Valley IronPigs IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Right-handed pitcher Scott Elarton was the International League's sole pitcher to win twice this week, and he did it by allowing just one run and seven hits over 12.0 innings of work. Elarton had entered the week coming off of his worst outing of the season, but he bounced back in a big way. At home against Charlotte on Tuesday, Elarton gave the IronPigs 6.0 strong innings. He allowed just three hits, one of which was a solo home run by Dan Johnson, but it was the only time the Knights would dent the plate during Lehigh Valley's 4-1 win. Elarton took the hill again Sunday to face Syracuse, and once again went 6.0 innings. This time he did not allow a run, as he scattered five hits and struck out a season-high five batters before handing things over to the bullpen. Elarton's second victory of the week pushed his record on the season to 3-1 with a 2.84 ERA. He has allowed more than one run just once in six starts.

36-year-old Scott Elarton first played professional baseball in 1994. He has played in the big leagues with the Astros, Rockies, Indians, and Royals. Since his last Major League action in 2008, he has endured surgeries on his arm and a broken foot. He was out of baseball last year, but signed a minor league deal with the Phillies prior to the 2012 season. Elarton is a native of Lamar, Colorado.
