Hens Comeback Falls Short as Red Wings Even Series
June 11, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
After scoring seven runs in the eighth inning to beat Rochester on Friday night, the Mud Hens found more late offense on Saturday but fell 6-5 to the Red Wings.
Rochester opened scoring with a 3-run homer by Adam Walker in the second. Kennys Vargas got the ball rolling with a double over the head of Anthony Gose. Bell was able to record an out, but walked Wilfredo Tovar. He then got a second out before surrendering the bomb to Walker. Prior to Saturday's game, Walker was tied with Toledo's Steven Moya for the International League lead in home runs with twelve. Walker's 3-runner - his 13th of the season - allowed him to pass Moya on the leaderboard.
The first run for Toledo came in the top half of the third. John Hicks led off the inning with a double to center field, opening the door for Toledo to answer the three-run second Rochester had. Red Wings starter Jose Berrios got Dixon Machado to ground out, moving Hicks to third. Berrios then got Tyler Bortnick to roll over to second, scoring Hicks.
With Berrios doing his job stifling the Hens offense, Rochester struck for three more in the fourth. Tommy Field began the frame with a single to left, and Walker followed with a single of his own. John Ryan Murphy walked to load the bases, and James Beresford grounded out to bring home Field and make it 4-1. With Logan Schafer at the plate, starter Chad Bell spiked a wild pitch that allowed Walker to score. Schafer then singled to bring home Beresford and make it 6-1 in favor of Rochester.
Bell's night came to an end after his hiccup in the fourth. The lefty allowed eight hits over four innings of work, giving up six runs - all earned - on four walks and just two strikeouts.
Toledo's bats woke up in the seventh, however, as they struck for four runs to make it a one-run game. Again, it was Hicks who jumpstarted the offense - this time with a single to right. Machado walked before Bortnick singled to bring home Hicks. Gose followed with a double that short-hopped the wall in left, bringing in Machado and Bortnick to make it 6-4 and end the night for Berrios. JaCoby Jones welcomed reliever Sean Burnett to the game by crushing a double to deep left-center, scoring Gose and cutting the Red Wings lead to 6-5.
Prior to the seventh, Berrios - the Twins' first round draft pick in 2012 - held the Hens to just three hits and one run through six innings of work. His final line would include seven hits and five runs over 6.2 innings with two walks and five strikeouts.
The bullpen did their part in holding Rochester where they were to give the offense a chance to stay in the game. Kurt Spomer, in his first appearance with Toledo since being called up from double-A Erie, pitched two perfect innings. The sidearmer struck out two in his Mud Hens debut. Drake Britton then came on and pitched a perfect inning of his own in the seventh. Logan Kensing allowed a leadoff walk in the eighth, but retired the next three to keep the lead at one going into the ninth.
Alex Wimmers came on for the Red Wings and shut down any possibility for a comeback, setting down Hicks, Machado, and Huffman to hang on and take a 6-5 win that serves to even up the series.
The Hens play the series finale at 1:35 p.m. on Sunday before returning home for a seven-game homestand with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Rochester.
