Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The RailRiders saw seven of their 14 knocks go for extra bases in a 10-7 defeat of the Clippers on Friday night.

@THE_HIGSTER: Kyle Higashioka went 3-for-4 with two homers, a career-high five RBIs, a walk and three runs scored on his mother's birthday. "Higgy" entered 2016 as a .233 career hitter before slashing .286/.338/.437/.775 in 34 games as Double-A Trenton's primary catcher to start the year. After going 0-for-4 in his first 2016 Triple-A game, he has hit safely in 10 straight, going 18-for-39 with slashes of .462/.488/.949/1.437. In that time he has five homers, four doubles, 13 RBIs and 11 runs scored. He has caught four SWB shutouts over his 10 games behind the plate. Last night he was intentionally walked for the third time over his nine-year pro career. It marked his first since April 27, 2011 when his Advanced-A Tampa Yankees visited Daytona. He has caught four SWB shutouts over his 10 games behind the plate. His five RBIs tied Chris Parmelee's performance at Louisville on May 19 for the most by a RailRider this season. Parmelee homered twice on that day as well, also the team's high-water mark for a single game in 2016. When he joined SWB this season, Higashioka had 32 career homers over 443 games and 1,702 plate appearances (1HR for every 53.19 plate appearances). In 11 games and 45 plate appearances with this year's RailRiders, he has five homers (1HR per 9.0 plate appearances). Only Buffalo's Dalton Pompey and Charlotte's J.B Shuck, who each ride active 11-game hitting streaks, have better current runs of swinging success in the IL than Higashioka's 10-gamer.

INTERNATIONAL (LEAGUE) MAN OF MYSTERY: The RailRiders received Tyler Austin from Double-A Trenton one week ago. He spent most of 2015 with SWB (73GP, .235/.309/.311/.620), usually playing right field. Mostly a first baseman this year at Double-A, in 50 games he slashed .260/.367/.395/.762 with a team-high 29 RBIs while ranking second on the club in doubles (10). He launched a homer in his first 2016 Triple-A plate appearance last Saturday against Columbus. Wednesday, he cranked another home run. Last night he doubled three times as the clean-up man. He drove in a run and scored twice. He has six doubles and two homers in just seven games and 29 plate appearances with this year's RailRiders, hitting .407. In his first go-round at Triple-A in 2015, he hit eight doubles and four home runs in 299 plate appearances. Last night he became the first RailRider to double thrice in a game since Ali Castillo turned the trick at Syracuse in last year's regular-season finale on Sept. 7, 2015. Castillo is now with the Giants' Double-A team in Richmond, Va. Only Advanced-A Tampa's Miguel Andujar (40) has more MiLB RBIs on the Yankees' farm this year than Austin (38).

HAIL CESAR: Cesar Puello went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs, a stolen base and a run scored. His lone out came on his bunt to pitcher Ryan Merritt. He was called out on a close play, but replay appeared to show that he reached the bag ahead of the throw.

SO YOU'RE SAYING THERE'S A CHANCE: The RailRiders need just one win over the set's two remaining games to notch SWB's first series victory at Columbus since the vagabond SWB Yankees took three of four from May 19-22, 2012. SWB had lost 10 of 11 at Huntington Park until Friday's victory.

SHORT STAY: Luis Cessa, in his first appearance since tossing for the big club on May 28, lasted just 1.1 innings on 50 pitches (32 strikes). It marked the shortest outing for an SWB starter since Bryan Mitchell recorded only one out at Norfolk on May 11, 2015.

SO CLOSE, BUT SO FAR: SWB and Columbus split the 2015 series, 3-3, with four of the games decided by one run. Eighteen of the last 36 clashes between the clubs have come down to a single score with Columbus taking 11 of those close calls. The RailRiders have lost 20 of the last 26 meetings with 12 one-run finals.
