Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, lost a pitcher's duel to the visiting Potomac Nationals Friday, 3-0, in front of 2,341 fans at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.
Kyle Hendricks dominated early for the Birds, firing his league leading 10th quality start. The Dartmouth product did not allow a run for the first time this season, surrendering only three singles without walking a batter. The righty received a no decision after being lifted prior to the seventh.
In a game that saw only five hits through the first six innings, Potomac finally broke through in the seventh, scoring two runs on a single, double and sac fly by David Freitas, Zach Walters and Michael Taylor. The runs all came off reliever Ben Henry, who suffered his first loss after allowing another run in the eighth.
For the Nationals, starter Nate Karns struck out 10 in six and two thirds shutout innings. He earned his first Carolina League win in the effort. The entire Potomac pitching staff struck out 15 Pelican batters, the second most K's against Myrtle Beach this season.
The outstanding pitching effort for Potomac saw Brett Nicholas' 15 game on base streak come to an end. Cafe Martinez did extend his hitting streak to 10.
Myrtle Beach and Potomac continue their series Saturday at 7:05 with the first 1,000 fans receiving a tube cooler courtesy of the Hampton Inn Broadway at the Beach. For more information call 843-918-6000 or visit MyrtleBeacPelicans.com.
