Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WILMINGTON, DE - Propelled by a two-run seventh inning, the Dash nipped the Wilmington Blue Rocks to trim their magic number to one with two games remaining with a 2-1 victory Friday night at Frawley Stadium.
Winston-Salem (42-25-1) is one win or one Salem loss away from its 25th playoff appearance since joining the Carolina League as a charter member in 1945. Winston has won 12 first half titles and is one victory away from clinching their third postseason birth since becoming the Dash prior to the 2009 campaign.
After six scoreless innings, Dash All-Star Brady Shoemaker came through with two outs and an 0-2 count. With Michael Earley at second following a one-out double, Shoemaker lashed a single up the middle. Shoemaker, who reached second on a late throw from the outfield, then came around on Dan Black's single to push Winston's lead to 2-0.
Wilmington trimmed the Dash lead in half in the bottom of the seventh on a Luis Piterson sacrifice fly. However, reliever Terance Marin stranded a runner at second to preserve the lead.
Marin followed with a perfect eighth inning before escaping a wild ninth unscathed for his third save of the season. The first two Wilmington (29-39) swingers reached on singles. Following a sacrifice bunt, Marin struck out Alex McClure and Luis Piterson to help the Dash escape with their 11th one-run win of 2012.
Dash southpaw starter Spencer Arroyo (5-3) posted his second scoreless effort against the Blue Rocks this week. Five days after blanking Wilmington over seven innings at BB&T Ballpark, Arroyo scattered five hits and stranded five runners in six shutout frames. Arroyo has held the Blue Rocks to two earned runs in 24 innings over four starts against Wilmington this season.
Winston bested Wilmington All-Star Sugar Ray Marimon (4-2) for the second time this week. Marimon, who had not lost this season until Sunday's 2-0 defeat in North Carolina, stranded eight runners, but the two-run seventh was his undoing.
The Dash and Blue Rocks play their second-to-last game of the first half Saturday night at 6:05, and Winston-Salem will clinch a playoff berth with a win. Jon Bachanov (5-1, 3.44 ERA) takes to the mound for the Dash against fellow right-hander Tyler Sample (1-7, 5.37 ERA). Pre-game coverage on wsdash.com begins at 5:50.
BB&T Ballpark will host the California-Carolina League All-Star Game, presented by BB&T, this Tuesday night at 7:15. A limited number of tickets are still available, and fans can log on to wsdash.com or call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 to secure their seats.
