LYNCHBURG, VA - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, used their first nine-inning complete game since 2007 in topping the Lynchburg Hillcats Wednesday, 5-1, at City Stadium.

Kyle Hendricks was outstanding in the win for the Pelicans, going the distance and allowing only one run on five hits. He issued one walk and struck out six. The righty tossed 97 pitches, completing the first nine inning CG for the Birds since James Parr did it on May 17, 2007 at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington. Hendricks allowed the one run in the fourth, potentially rattled after hitting Lynchburg's Tommy La Stella in the head. The next two batters singled to drive in pinch runner David Rohm. Hendricks did not allow another hit, however, until Nick Ahmed singled in the ninth.

The win for Hendricks was his third and second in as many starts. The game was his second complete game of the season and fourth effort of eight innings or more. His ERA falls to 2.53, the best among active players in the Carolina League.

Offensively, the Birds needed only eight pitches to get on the board. With one out in the first, Hanser Alberto and Christian Villanueva doubled on consecutive pitches, the hits carbon copies of each other, for a 1-0 lead. The Pelicans then scored one run in each inning from the fourth through the seventh to make it 5-1. The two biggest blasts were Villanueva's fifth homerun in the fifth inning and Cafe Martinez's little league homerun in the sixth. Martinez tripled off the wall in left and scored on a throwing error that left Lynchburg catcher Braeden Schlehuber sprawled out in the grass back of home in frustration.

The win advances Myrtle's record to 5-2 in the second half. The Pelicans welcome in a fellow 5-2 club, the Carolina Mudcats, Thursday at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. First pitch is at 7:05, with Randy Henry and Mike Rayl facing off on the mound. For tickets call 843-918-6000 or visit MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
