Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Woodbridge, VA - These are not the first-half Wilmington Blue Rocks. The team's most lopsided win of the year coincided with its most prolific run-scoring performance as the Blue Crew (31-45, 2-4) topped the Potomac Nationals (34-42, 3-3) on Tuesday evening, 11-2. The team that averaged a league-low 3.2 runs/game through its first 70 games has begun the second stanza with 35 runs scored over a six-game span (5.8 runs/game). A day removed from snapping a 10-game road losing streak, Wilmington logged its first pair of road wins on consecutive days since May 16-17.
Cheslor Cuthbert collected his first of a season-high four RBIs in the opening inning with a sacrifice fly to claim a 1-0 lead. The team never looked back. While David Freitas cut the Rocks' lead to 2-1 in the third with his two-out double, the Rocks scored thrice in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to grab firm command of the game.
Wilmington never trailed thanks to a solid effort by starter Brooks Pounders (1-2). The former Pirates farmhand struck out seven over 5.1 innings, allowing just two runs en route to his first Advanced-A win. His counterpart, Robbie Ray (3-4), was not as successful. He issued six walks over 4.2 innings, allowing five runs in the process. Ryan Demmin did not fare much better. He allowed Cuthbert's fifth home run of the season and gave up six runs (three earned) over 2.1 innings of work.
The four-game series concludes at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday night. The Blue Rocks will announce their starter tomorrow morning while Potomac is set to counter with right-hander Trevor Holder (4-2, 3.67). Broadcast coverage begins at 6:35 p.m. as studio host Rob Cunningham brings fans the Rocks Report Pre-game Show, presented by Wawa, on 89.7 WGLS-FM and online at wgls.rowan.edu.
