Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

SALEM, VA - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, couldn't back up an outstanding pitching performance from starter Kyle Hendricks Sunday, falling 3-1 at Salem's Lewis Gale Field.

Hendricks, making his second start for Myrtle Beach (4-5), fired six and two thirds innings of two-run, five-hit ball. His outing marks the longest of any Myrtle Beach pitcher this season. Hendricks cruised through three innings, using just 21 pitches total to that point. He needed only four pitches to navigate the third. The fourth inning was the most taxing for Hendricks, requiring 20 throws, but he sailed through, striking out two and facing only four batters.

The damage against Hendricks came in the second and sixth innings. The righty allowed a run in each, both times on a sacrifice fly. Salem's third run also scored on a sac fly, but off Ben Rowen in the eighth.

Myrtle Beach could muster but one run in support of Hendricks. The first five Pelicans reached in the sixth inning, with Odubel Herrera falling second on that list, making it aboard on a fielder's choice. He took second on an errant throw. The next batter, Santiago Chirino, reached on an error by shortstop Xander Bogaerts, allowing Herrera to come in and score. That play made it 2-1, but the Pelicans got no closer.

The loss is charged to Hendricks, his second. Red Sox starter Manny Rivera got the win, his first. The southpaw worked six, five hit innings. The run against him was unearned.

Myrtle Beach returns home Monday night at 7:05 against the Winston-Salem Dash. Wilmer Font makes his second start of the season for the Pelicans. For tickets and more information, call 843-918-6000 or visit online to MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, powered by TicketReturn.
