Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - One week into the team's 14th season on the Grand Strand, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans inch closer to the century mark of alumni sent to the Major Leagues. The 89th Pelican to the Majors is Joe Wieland, who made his big league debut for the Padres Saturday. The weekend was also a milestone for Robbie Ross, the 88th Pelican to the bigs. Ross earned his first MLB win in a 6-2 Texas victory over Minnesota.

Wieland, dealt to the Padres last season as part of the Mike Adams trade, went 6-3 with a 2.10 ERA in 14 games with the Pelicans in 2011. Promoted to San Diego early in the week, Wieland made his first Major League start against the Dodgers Saturday. He allowed six runs on six hits in five innings, including two homeruns to all-star slugger Matt Kemp. Wieland did not, however, allow a hit after the second inning.

Ross, the 2012 Rangers Minor League Pitcher of the Year, made his MLB debut last Sunday, firing a shutout inning against the Chicago White Sox. He earned his first big league win Saturday against Minnesota, pitching two thirds of an inning in relief of Yu Darvish.

The lefthanded Ross went 9-4 with a 2.26 ERA in 21 outings with the Pelicans in 2011. He made the Rangers' roster out of Spring Training.

Saturday also proved to be a big day for former Pelicans hitters. Former Myrtle Beach catchers Tyler Flowers and Jarrod Saltalamacchia both hit homeruns for the White Sox and Red Sox respectively.

Pelicans are present across Major League rosters, with former Birds having debuted for 20 different MLB clubs since the team came into existence in 1999.

The Pelicans return home to TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark Monday night at 7:05 against the Winston-Salem Dash. The night is a celebration of Splash's birthday and a Kids Eat Free Monday. Great seats are available by calling 843-918-6000 or by visiting MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, powered by TicketReturn.
