Keys Win Rubber Match 6-4 Over Wilmington

WILMINGTON, DE - The Keys again survived a late rally, defeating the Wilmington Blue Rocks 6-4 to take the series and improve their record to 5-4.

With the Keys holding a 5-2 lead entering the bottom of the eighth inning, Wilmington scored twice to cut the lead to one and were threatening to tie the game but left the tying run stranded at second base.

In the ninth inning, Wilmington again had the tying run in scoring position, but relief pitcher David Walters successfully shut the door on Wilmington's furious comeback effort to give Frederick the win.

Relief pitcher Kenny Moreland gets the win for the Keys after going four innings and not allowing an earned run. Moreland stepped in for starting pitcher Rick Zagone after the third inning when Zagone gave up four walks, hit a batter and gave up one hit.

Wilmington's attempted comeback in the eight started against relief pitcher Nick Haughian. A double and two walks loaded the bases before a two-RBI single from Angel Franco cut the deficit to one. Walters, who entered midway through the inning, got the third out on a fly ball to end the inning.

A big insurance run from Joe Oliveira in the top of the ninth, who was brought on to pinch-hit for Scott Thomas, gave the Keys a more-comfortable 6-4 lead. Oliveira kicked off the top of the ninth with a leadoff triple and was brought home with an RBI single by Michael Rooney.

The Blue Rocks grabbed the lead first when two walks and an error loaded the bases. A wild pitch from Rick Zagone brought in the Blue Rocks baserunner from third and the opposition took a 1-0 lead.

The Keys took the lead for good in the third inning, scoring four times in the frame to take 4-1 lead. Matt Sweeney started the inning with a single and a walk to Trent Mummey put two runners on. Ty Kelly brought the first runner home with an RBI single, but the ball was mishandled in the outfield, bringing another run home to give the Keys a 2-1 advantage. Two batters later, Aaron Baker made the score 3-1 when he hit an RBI single to right field.

Then, with runners on first and third, the Keys called for a double steal and the runners were safe at both home plate and second base, bringing the score to 4-1.

Although the Blue Rocks threatened late in the game, the Keys never lost their initial lead.

The Keys return home on Monday when they'll face the Potomac Nationals. First pitch is scheduled for 7 PM and coverage starts at 6:40 PM on 1450 AM The Source and online at wthu.org.
