Helmer Named Reebok/AHL Player of the Week

January 17, 2011 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Oklahoma City Barons News Release

Oklahoma City - Oklahoma City Barons defenseman Bryan Helmer was named the Reebok American Hockey League Player of the week, the AHL office announced today.

Last week was a special week for the 6-1, 210-pounder from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Helmer recorded six points (3-3-6) and was a +5 in three games for the Barons last week to earn Reebok AHL Player of the Week honors.

Since joining the Barons January 7, he has recorded 10 points (3-7-10) in only six games played. He has scored points in five of the six games he has played for Oklahoma City, including multiple points in three of them. His five-game point scoring streak is the longest by a Barons player this season.

Helmer's productive week on the ice also led to more accolades for the 38-year-old. The three-time Calder Cup champion and AHL record holder with 138 Calder Cup games played moved past John Slaney for the most points scored all time by an AHL defenseman. In his 18th season as a professional, he has recorded 520 points (122-398-520) in 988 AHL games played. Helmer has two more milestone on the horizon. With two assists, he will move past the 400 assist mark in games played in the AHL, while with 12 games played, he will become the seventh player in AHL history to play 1,000 games.

Oklahoma City looks to extend its four-game winning streak tomorrow when they take on the Lake Erie Monsters in Cleveland, Ohio. Faceoff is 6 p.m. (ct). The game can be heard on the Barons flagship station, 96.1 FM KXY.
