Texas Stars News Release
ABBOTSFORD, BC - Matt Fraser scored his team-leading tenth goal of the season as the Texas Stars lost 2-1 in a shootout to the Abbotsford Heat Saturday night, but took home three out of a possible four points in the two-game weekend series at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre.
After a scoreless first period, where Texas out-shot Abbotsford 16-9, the Stars scored first for the second straight game. One a five-on-three power play Jordie Benn set up Matt Fraser for a blazing one-timer from the right faceoff circle that found the inside of the left post and in at 5:13. The goal was Fraser's team-leading tenth goal of the season and was assisted by Benn and Cody Eakin. The Heat tied the game with a power play goal their own three minutes later. Ben Street threaded a pass through the middle to an unmarked Krys Kolanos at the far left side of the net and an easy tap-in goal at 8:07. Texas out-shot Abbotsford 13-5 in the second period, but the score remained 1-1 at the end of forty minutes.
In the third period the shots were even at 10-10, but the goaltenders were the stars of the frame as both Jack Campbell for Texas and Barry Brust for the Heat were excellent.
Each team had scoring chances in overtime, but the game went to a shootout. T.J. Brodie and Roman Horak scored on Abbotsford's first two attempts, but Tomas Vincour answered back in round three and with the pressure on in round five, Jordie Benn tied it at 2-2 with a goal on Brust. However, on the very next shot Kolanos beat Campbell and won the game for the Heat with their fifth round attempt.
Barry Brust stopped 39-of-40 shots in regulation and overtime for Abbotsford and made three saves on five shootout attempts to record his sixth win of the season. Jack Campbell put in a superb outing for Texas, making 25 saves on 26 shots through open play and stopped 2-of-5 shootout attempts as his record goes to 4-3-2. The Stars out-shot the Heat 40-27 and went 1-for-5 on the power play; Abbotsford was 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
The Texas Stars return to action on Wednesday, December 19th as they host the San Antonio Rampage at 7:30 p.m. at Cedar Park Center for another Winning Wednesday and H-E-B Night. Pro-rated full and partial 2012-13 season seat packages are on sale now. For more information on Texas Stars season tickets call (512) GO-STARS (467-8277) or visit www.TexasStarsHockey.com.
