Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Jacksonville Suns earned a crucial victory in their series opener against the Montgomery Biscuits, riding a pair of late home runs and a strong pitching performance from Andrew Heaney to an 8-1 victory at Riverwalk Stadium.
Heaney (4-1) did not allow an earned run in seven innings of work on the mound for Jacksonville, which snapped a four-game losing streak with the win.
The Suns struck first in the top of the third against Biscuits starter Michael Colla, taking 1-0 lead thanks to a Biscuits fielding error. Montgomery tied it up facing Heaney in the fourth, plating Mikie Mahtook on catcher J.T. Realmuto's throwing error.
It wasn't until the top of the sixth that the Suns regained the advantage facing Biscuits reliever Joe Van Meter (0-3). Chris Gutierrez's RBI groundout put Jacksonville back on top, and Danny Pertusati's sac fly made it a 3-1 game.
Meanwhile, Heaney continued to deal. The left-hander surrendered just five hits and two walks while striking out five over his seven innings on the hill. The number three Marlins prospect lowered his Double-A ERA to 2.28 in the process.
In the eighth, the Suns struck a decisive blow. Derek Dietrich, batting with Mark Canha on base, launched a tape measure shot to right field, his ninth home run of the season to give Jacksonville a 5-1 lead. Canha would go deep himself in the ninth, putting the game out of reach with a three-run blast that finished the scoring.
Scott McGough recorded the final six outs in relief of Heaney to keep the Suns in front of the Mobile BayBears in the South division by one and a half games.
The Suns will go for their second straight victory over Montgomery in game two of the five-game road series on Saturday. Right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (5-3, 3.61) is on tap to make the start for Jacksonville, while the Biscuits will send right-hander Victor Mateo (5-9, 4.33) to the mound. First pitch is set for 7:35 p.m. ET.
Suns fans can listen to Saturday's game on the Suns Baseball Network, 94.1 WSOS-FM or through jaxsuns.com, MiLB.com or the Suns iPhone or Android app, beginning at 6:50 p.m. ET with the UF Health Suns Pre-Game Show.
