August 23, 2013 - Southern League (SL1)
Huntsville Stars News Release
To open up a five-game set at Trustmark Park and their final road trip of 2013, the Huntsville Stars beat the Mississippi Braves by a score of 2-1 on Friday night.
For the M-Braves, they got things started off in the first inning against Stars starting pitcher Drew Gagnon. Following a two-out double by second baseman Tommy LaStella and a walk drawn by third basemen Edward Salcedo, both runners would a score on a two-run double from outfielder Jose Martinez to make the score 2-0.
Those early runs were plenty for the Mississippi pitching staff. Starting pitcher Michael Lee turned in an impressive scoreless seven innings while giving eight hits to improve to 9-8 on the season. The victory for Lee and the shutout for the M-Braves were both insured by an inning of relief from righty Juan Jaime and a scoreless ninth from righty Ryne Harper.
The shutout marks the third time in the last eleven games that the Stars have been blanked by an opponent. Huntsville has now scored just 17 runs in their last 12 games and has been held to two runs or less in a game for the last seven straight contests.
Despite the shutout, the Stars outhit the M-Braves by a 9-7 margin. Huntsville was led by outfielder Eric Patterson with two hits, his second straight multi-hit game. The Stars left 11 runners on base and were 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
Mississippi tacked on their two other insurance runs in the sixth inning with a RBI double from outfielder Robby Hefflinger and a RBI single by shortstop Jamie Pedroza.
All four runs of the ballgame were tabbed to Gagnon, who fell to 4-8 on the year with the loss after tossing 5.2 innings while giving up seven hits and striking out four batters.
Aside from Gagnon, righties Eric Marzec, Michael Olmsted and Frankie De La Cruz combined to toss 2.1 innings of scoreless and hitless baseball.
On Saturday, the Stars will play game two of a five-game set against the Mississippi Braves at Trustmark Park. Huntsville will send RHP Andy Moye (5-14, 4.17 ERA) to the hill to try to get back on the winning track while Mississippi will counter with LHP Ian Thomas (7-7, 2.80 ERA).
First pitch is at 6:00 PM.
