Hawks swoop in late to swipe a win

SOUTH BEND, IN -- A two-out, two-run triple by Manuel Ferrer gave the South Bend Silver Hawks a 5-4 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Sunday afternoon at Coveleski Stadium. The Rattlers led 4-1 after the top of the fourth inning, but the bullpen could not hold the lead. Ferrer drove in three runs on the afternoon and sent the Hawks to their second straight win.

Robby Hudson, who had three hits in the game, put the Rattlers (7-10) in front with a two-out RBI single in the top of the second.

South Bend (7-10) tied the game on a sacrifice fly by Bryan Byrne in the bottom of the third.

Wisconsin broke the tie on an RBI double by Alex Gary in the top of the fourth. Jeff Dominguez made it 3-1 on another RBI double later in the inning. Casey Craig topped off the rally with a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-1. But, the Rattler offense was finished for the day.

Justin Thomas was solid through the first five inning, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth. The first three Silver Hawks reached to load the bases with no outs. Thomas struck out Trey Hendricks looking to get the first out of the inning and then turned the game over to the Timber Rattler bullpen.

Rollie Gibson entered and walked Steve Mena to force in a run Manuel Ferrer singled in another run to cut the Wisconsin lead to 4-3. Gibson got out of the inning by getting Ciriaco to ground into a 6-4-3 double play.

In the eighth, Rattler reliever Joe Woerman hit the first batter and walked the second. Edgar Guaramato, the fourth Rattler pitcher of the game, entered and got the first two outs. Then, Guaramato fell behind Ferrer 2-0. Ferrer lined the next pitch to the gap in rightcenter for a two-run triple and a 5-4 South Bend lead.

Forest Cory, who had pitched a perfect seventh and a perfect eighth inning, turned the game over to Jonathan Valverde for the ninth. The Silver Hawk closer gave up a hit, but got a double play and a pop out to earn his second save in as many days and fifth of the season.

The Rattlers conclude their series with the Silver Hawks on Monday night. Paul Fagan (0-1, 6.43) gets the starting pitching assignment for Wisconsin. South Bend sends Ramon Sanchez (0-3, 10.93) to the hill. Game time is 5:30pm CDT.
