South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend - The talk for most of the past week was about a new player to be placed on the South Bend Silver Hawks roster Friday as the Silver Hawks opened a four game series against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. The talking however surrounded Justin Upton, the Arizona Diamondbacks first pick and the first overall pick in the 2005 draft. On Sunday, it was the "other" player, Manny Ferrer who was not talked that became the hero in a come from behind 5-4 win over the Rattlers.
In a trend that continued for the Hawks, they fell behind early trialing 1-0 after two, but tied the game in their half of the third.
In the fourth with one retired, Chao Kuan Wu doubled to left-center field and came home on Alex Gary's double to left field for a 2-1 Wisconsin lead. Robby Hudson followed with an infield single to short moving Gary to third. Jeffrey Dominguez then doubled to left field plating Gary for a 3-1 lead with Hudson taking third. Casey Craig's sacrifice fly scored Hudson and the Rattlers held onto a 4-1 lead through five and one half innings.
The Hawks inched closer in the sixth on RBI from Steve Mena, who walked with the bases loaded and Manny Ferrer's RBI single to pull within one at 4-3.
In the eighth, the Hawks were able to complete their comeback. Orlando Mercado reached when he was hit by a Joe Woerman pitch. Frank Curreri walked, putting runners at first and second. Greg Thomson was a pinch runner for Mercado and Eddy Guaramato replaced Joe Woerman on the hill for the Rattlers. After Trey Hendricks popped out and Steve Mena struck out, Manny Ferrer tripled to right field chasing home Thomson and Curreri for the Hawks 5-4 lead and eventual win.
Forest Cory (2-0) gets the win and Joe Woerman (0-2) suffers the loss. Jonathan Valverde picked up his fifth save of the year.
The Silver Hawks and Timber Rattlers close their four game set on $1 Monday at the Cove with hot dogs, tickets and Pepsi product all $1. First pitch scheduled for 6:30 P.M and gates opening at 5:30 PM.
