Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, OH - The Dayton Dragons (7-10) picked up back-to-back wins for the second time in 2006 as they took game three of the four game set from the Kane County Cougars (11-6) by the final score of 2-1 in front of 8,729 fans at Fifth Third Field Sunday afternoon.

Carlos Fisher (WP, 2-1) was spectacular on the hill for the Dragons for the second consecutive outing, shutting out the Cougars for 6.1 innings, allowing three hits, with a season high nine strikeouts and one walk allowed. Fisher has now thrown back-to-back starts of six innings or more without permitting a run to cross the plate.

Vince Mazzaro (LP, 2-1) struggled with his control at times, but still put forth a solid effort for Kane County. The Cougars right-hander allowed one run on two hits, struck out seven, and walked four in five innings of work. The lone run off Mazzaro came in the bottom of the first when Mike Griffin led off with his Midwest League leading ninth double, and eventually came around to score on an RBI single by Habelito Hernandez.

All the while, Fisher was cruising along for the Dragons. During one stretch from the third through the sixth, Fisher set down 11 in a row, including a stretch of five straight strikeouts in the fifth and the sixth.

The Cougars threatened in the top of the seventh as Jose Pineda singled and Raul Padron walked to put runners at the corners with one out. Blake Hendley (S, 1) would be called in from the bullpen to relieve Fisher, and Hendley promptly retired the next two hitters to end the Kane County threat.

The score would remain 1-0 until the bottom of the seventh when Bobby Mosby swatted the first pitch he saw from Cougars reliever Joe Piekarz (ND) into the seats in right field for his second home run of the season to give the Dragons the two run advantage.

The insurance run would prove to be important as Kane County dented the plate in the 8th inning. With one out, Frank Martinez and Jeff Baisley hit consecutive singles and put runners at first and third. Steve Kleen then hit an RBI groundout to third to cut the lead in half at 2-1. However, Hendley would induce a lazy fly ball to centerfield off the bat of Pineda to get out of the jam with the one-run lead intact. Hendley worked a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the game and the second straight victory for the Dragons.

The Dragons wrap up the four game series with the Kane County Cougars Monday night at Fifth Third Field. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live beginning with the pre game show at 6:30 PM.
