Burlington Bees News Release
Peoria, IL (April 23, 2006) - After totaling just one run and 13 hits in the last three games, the Burlington Bees (7-10) erupted for eleven runs and 17 hits, but it still wasn't enough as the team lost it fourth in a row, 13-11 to the Peoria Chiefs (8-9) at O'Brien Field this afternoon. The Chiefs scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to erase the Bees' early 10-3 lead.
The Bees scored nine runs on eleven hits to knock out Chiefs' starter Todd Blackford after 3.1 innings. Blackford walked the first two batters of the game and they came in on an RBI single by Mario Lisson and a sacrifice fly by JP Lowen. The Bees added three more in the third on an RBI single by Carlos Arroyo and a two-run hit by Antonio Sabatini. The Bees rallied for five runs with two outs in the fifth. Kiel Thibault doubled to drive in the first run and Lowen followed that up with a two-run homer to right, his second homer of the year. A double by Jeff Howell, knocked Blackford out of the game. Arroyo greeted reliever Jesse Estrada with an RBI single and Sabatini capped the rally with a triple inside the right field line.
Peoria was keeping pace by taking advantage of the walks issued by Bees' starter Ryan DiPietro. Davy Gregg walked to leadoff the first inning and scored on a two-out single by Kevin Collins. In the third, Robinson Chirinos doubled, stole third, and scored on a groundout by Jesus Valdez before Collins blasted a solo home to right-center. After the Bees built the 10-3 lead, Mark Reed opened the bottom of the fourth with a single and after a popout, DiPietro walked two men to load the bases. Chirinos drove in two with a single to make it 10-5. After a force out at second, Collins hit a pop-up to shallow left that looked like the final out of the inning, but the ball fell in and shortstop Valentino Arce was charged with an error. DiPietro gave way to Rayner Oliveros, who allowed three straight singles that led to four more runs to tie the game. Ryan Norwood drove in one, Alberto Garcia added two more, and Reed finished with a single to left, but was thrown out going to second when Lisson cut the throw toward the plate and relayed to second for the out.
The Chiefs took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Brandon Taylor led off with a double and scored on two groundouts to put the Chiefs up 11-10. Chirinos extended the lead to 12-10 with a solo home run off the foul pole in left. After the home run, Bees' manager Jim Gabella asked the umpire to check the baseball that hit off the pole that led to an argument and Gabella's ejection. Both managers had several disputes with the umpires throughout the first five innings.
Estrada (2-0) kept the Bees off the board through the seventh and picked up the win. The Bees pulled to within one in the eighth with a run against Justin Rayborn. Thibault led off with his second double and scored on two groundouts with Howell picking up the RBI. After the RBI, Arroyo and pinch-hitter Miguel Vega singled to put runners on the corners, but Chiefs' closer Ed Campusano came in and struck out Ethien Santana to end the threat. The Chiefs added their final run in the bottom of the eighth against Cody Harkcom. The run was unearned after an error by Lowen at first. In the top of the ninth, Arce reached on an error, but Campusano struck out the side for his fourth save. Oliveros (2-1) took the loss for the Bees.
The Bees and Chiefs wrap up this series tomorrow night at 6:30 at O'Brien Field. RH David Henninger (1-0, 4.50) will start for the Bees against RH Scott Taylor, making his first start for the Chiefs. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:10.
