Hawks Humble Captains 9-7

Lake County Captains News Release


(Eastlake, OH) - The South Bend Silver Hawks (34-33) used extra innings to defeat the Lake County Captains (30-36) by a score of 9-7. The bases were loaded in the top of the 13th inning and Gerson Montilla laced a base hit to center field, which scored two and the score was 9-7. That was the final in 13 innings and the time of the game was four hours and thirty-two minutes.

Lake County scored first in the bottom of the opening frame when Luigi Rodriguez and Francisco Lindor walked to begin the ballgame and Jack Hannahan singled to right field and the score was 1-0. Later in the inning, Jerrud Sabourin singled to left field to score the second run of the inning and loaded the bases for Bryson Myles. Myles, Alex Lavisky and Robel Garcia all struck out with the bases full of Captains. The score was 2-0 Lake County after one inning.

South Bend got on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning. Roidany Aguila singled to right field to start the inning. Aguila advanced to second on a wild pitch. He took third on a ground out, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Marc Bourgeois. The score was 2-1 after two innings of play.

The fifth inning was the big inning, South Bend batted around and scored five times in the inning. The big hit in the inning was a double by Gerson Montilla, which plated two and gave the Silver Hawks a 4-2 lead. South Bend added two more in the inning and led the ballgame 6-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.

Lake County scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Todd Hankins walked with one out in the inning and then Luigi Rodriguez struck out. With two outs, Francisco Lindor hit an opposite field double down the left field line. Hankins scampered home and the score was 6-3 in favor of South Bend.

The Silver Hawks got the run back in the top of the seventh inning after Matt Helm singled and moved to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a groundball. Helm scored and scored on a base hit by Aguila. The score was 7-3 South Bend. In the bottom of the seventh inning Lake County answered with a run of its own. Jordan Smith and doubled to begin the inning and scored and on a single by Bryson Myles and the score was 7-4.

Lake County tied the game in the ninth, Jordan Smith singled to lead off and scored on a Sabourin double. With the score seven to five, Bryson Myles singled to cut the lead to six to five. Later in the inning, Zach MacPhee who came into pinch run for Myles, scored on a dropped third strike that would have ended the ballgame, when Rodriguez swung through the offering and the Captians tied the game at 7-7 and the game headed to extra's.

RHP Blake Perry (0-1) was the starter for the Silver Hawks. Perry didn't get the decision, he pitched three and two thirds innings allowing three hits, two earned runs, he walked seven and struck out six. Keith Hessler entered the ballgame and pitched one third of an inning and struck out the only man he faced. J.R. Bradley earned the win (3-4) after twirling three and two thirds innings he allowed four hits two earned runs, three walks and struck out two. Willy Paredes pitched one and two thirds innings and allowed. Seth Simmons (3-0) got the win and Kaleb Fleck picked up his first save of the season.

LHP Elvis Araujo (2-5) got the start for the Captains and took the loss. Araujo lasted four and one third inning and allowed seven hits, six runs all earned, he walked two and did not strike out a batter. Rob Nixon pitched two and two thirds innings for the Captains and allowed five hits, one earned run and struck out two. Grant Sides pitched two innings for the Captains and did not allow a run while striking out two. Jeff Johnson (3-3) took the loss for the Captains.

Friday's game is a Fireworks Friday Night presented by State Farm Insurance Agent Kevin Kilfoyle and 92.3 FM, The Fan. Fans will be treated to a post-game fireworks extravaganza. Chardon shooting victim Nick Walczak will be in attendance and will throw out a ceremonial first pitch on Friday. Walczak is recovering from four gun shot wounds and is paralyzed from the chest down. The Chardon cheerleaders will be on hand as well. Game time is 7:00 PM. Lake County will send RHP Joe Colon (5-6, 2.83) to the mound against Radhames Quezada (4-6, 3.82) for the Dayton Dragons.
