Burlington Bees News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Burlington Bees (30-36) failed to score in an 8-to-0 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels (29-38) on Thursday night. The Bees fell just short of their first series sweep over an opponent this season after winning four straight games against the Kernels spanning two separate series.
Max Perlman made his second start of the season and ran into trouble a couple times on Thursday night. The first batter he faced lifted a fly ball to deep center field that the wind carried to the warning track. Bees' centerfielder Aaron Shipman chased down the ball, but Alex Yarbrough earned a leadoff triple. The three-bagger was the first hit of Yarbrough's profes- sional career.
Yarbrough eventually scored on an RBI single by Kaleb Cowart. Cowart also scored on when Frazier followed with a single to rightfield where Eliezer Mesa had trouble fielding the ball. Mesa received his first error with the Bees and Kernels had a 2-to-0 lead after one inning.
The Kernels improved on the lead in the third when Cowart lofted an RBI single to rightfield and later scored in the inning. The Kernels led 2-to-0 after three innings.
They scored again in the fourth after Perlman retired the first two batters, but hit Chevy Clarke and eventually allowed an RBI single to Yarbrough. Perlman was able to stop the bleeding in the fourth and pitch a scoreless fifth, but left the game with the Bees trailing 5-to-0.
The Kernels handed Perlman (1-3) his third loss after he allowed eight hits and five runs (three earned). Perlman also struck out three batters and still has the team's best ERA with a 2.83 average. Chas Mye and Brent Powers pitched three innings out of the bullpen and both allowed a home run. Kaleb Cowart hit one of the home runs and finished the game with three hits in four at bats and four RBIs. Mye and Powers combined to allow three more earned runs and give the Kernels an 8-to-0 lead.
The Bees never truly connected against Cam Bedrosian. The right-hander pitched five scoreless innings and earned seven strikeouts against the Bees lineup. Bedrosian is the son of former major league closer, Steve Bedrosian and is considered one of the best pitching prospects in the Angels organization.
Only B.A. Vollmuth and Royce Consigli had hits in the game - both went 2-for-4. Bobby Crocker walked three times, but the Bees went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and did not have one extra-base hit in the loss.
The Bees try to rebound in Beloit when they face the Snappers at 7 p.m. on Friday. Seth Frankoff takes the hill looking for his second win as a starter. For information on Bees baseball and promotions, call (319) 754-5705 or visit www.gobees.com.
