Peoria Chiefs News Release
Beloit, WI - The Peoria Chiefs committed two errors in the eighth inning and the two unearned runs catapulted the Beloit Snappers to a playoff-clinching 5-3 win on Thursday night. The loss eliminates the 33-34 Chiefs from playoff contention with three home games left on the first half.
The Snappers got off to a great start as Nate Roberts led off the bottom of the first with a solo homer off Kyler Burke. Two batters later Drew Leachman singled to right and Burke struck out Twins top prospect Miguel Sano. Adam Bryant lined a two-run homer, his first of the season, over the left-field wall to put Beloit on top 3-0 before Burke escaped the inning.
The Chiefs did not have a hit against Tyler Jones through the first three innings. With one out in the fourth Dustin Geiger doubled high off the 16-foot batters eye in straightaway center field. After a groundout by Paul Hoilman, Wes Darvill singled to center as Geiger scored easily. Javier Baez launched his second homer of the series and fourth of the season over the scoreboard in left-center to tie the game 3-3. The blast was his second in as many nights to clear the Beloit scoreboard.
The game stayed tied into the eighth after the Chiefs left a runner at third in the sixth inning. Roberts reached on an error by Baez to start the eighth and AJ Pettersen laid down a sac bunt. Luis Liria threw wildly to first base as Roberts advanced to third and Pettersen made second. After a pop up the Chiefs intentionally walked Sano to set up a double play situation. Bryant connected on a sac fly to center for a 4-3 lead and Jhon Goncalves singled home Pettersen for a 5-3 Snappers lead.
Michael Tonkin struck out the side in the ninth to preserve the victory. He struck out all nine batters he faced in the series with two saves as Beloit clinched their first playoff spot since 2007.
Burke allowed three runs on six hits over 6 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out four in his team-leading seventh quality start. Liria (1-1) allowed two unearned runs on one hit and one intentional walk in 1 2/3 innings of work.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Javier Baez (SS) - Baez homered over the scoreboard in the fourth inning to tie the game at three. He finished 1-for-4 with two RBI and completed the series 5-for-11 with two homers, four RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases.
