Hawks Fall Short After Lengthy Rain Delay

MIDLAND, MICHIGAN - The Great Lakes Loons plated three runs in the eighth inning and came from behind to defeat the South Bend Silver Hawks (26-24) 6-4 Sunday afternoon at Dow Diamond. The Hawks and Loons fought through a one hour and 59 minute rain delay that began in the top of the third with Hawks trailing 3-0.

Raydel Sanchez (1-1) earned the win for Great Lakes in relief, allowing one unearned run on two hits over four innings. Willy Paredes (1-1) surrendered the three eighth-inning runs and was the game's losing pitcher.

The Silver Hawks emerged from the nearly two hour delay and claimed a 4-3 lead. Ender Inciarte got the Silver Hawks on the scoreboard with an RBI ground out scoring Ryan Court, who had reached base prior to the lengthy delay. The Silver Hawks tied the game with two runs in the fourth-inning; Roidany knocked in a run with a ground ball to second and Court tied the game with an RBI double.

Tom Belza gave the Hawks the lead in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly.

The Loons tied the game in the eighth inning on an RBI triple from Delvis Morales. Moments later he scored the go-ahead run on a balk from Paredes. Joe Winker's RBI fielder's choice put the Loons up 6-4. Keith Hessler tossed four scoreless innings out the Silver Hawks bullpen. The left-hander did not allow a base runner and retired all 12 he faced.

Both starting pitchers did not return after the rain delay. Jesse Darrah started for South Bend and went two innings and allowed three earned runs on two hits over two innings. Arismendy Ozoria started for Great Lakes and surrendered one unearned run on one hit over two innings.

Court finished 3-for-4 with and RBI for South Bend. Morales notched two hits for the Loons.

Gerson Montilla was ejected in the eighth inning by home plate umpire Travis Eggert.

The Silver Hawks and Loons are a half game behind Bowling Green for second place in the Eastern Division. The Hot Rods play at Fort Wayne on Sunday night.

The Silver Hawks and Loons continue the four-game series Monday at Dow Diamond. First pitch is slated for 2:05 p.m. Tyler Green (1-2, 3.04) gets the start for South Bend and he will be opposed by right-hander Jarret Martin (2-3, 3.42).
