Dayton Dragons News Release
Grand Rapids, Mich.-Kyle Waldrop collected three hits including a two-run home run and Ryan Wright drove in the tie-breaking run with a two-out single in the eighth inning as the Dayton Dragons battled back from a three-run deficit to defeat the West Michigan Whitecaps 6-3 on Sunday. The Dragons have won back-to-back road games for the first time since April 13-14.
West Michigan's Steven Moya belted a pair of home runs to lift the Whitecaps to a 3-0 lead over the first three innings. But Dragons starting pitcher Stalin Gerson rebounded from a rough start to shut down the Whitecaps over the rest of his outing before leaving after the seventh inning.
The Dragons trailed 3-0 going to the seventh inning and had advanced only one runner as far as second base. Juan Silva began the Dayton seventh with a bunt single and scored on Wright's double. Waldrop followed with a two-run home run to right-center, his second homer of the year and second in the last three games, to tie the game at 3-3.
In the eighth, Kurtis Muller reached on an error to start the inning and went to second on a balk with one out. Wright hit a hard one-hopper over the glove of the third baseman into left field to bring in Muller and give Dayton a 4-3 lead. The Dragons scored two more in the ninth when Juan Perez looped a single to left to bring in Yovan Gonzalez and Sean Buckley and make it 6-3.
Gerson (3-3) earned the win, going seven innings and allowing nine hits and three runs with no walks and five strikeouts. El'Hajj Muhammad pitched a perfect eighth inning and Carlos Contreras tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for his fourth save.
The Dragons collected 12 hits. Waldrop and Perez each had three hits. Wright and Buckley had two. Wright extended his hitting streak to 10 straight games. He is batting .500 over the course of the hitting streak, going 20 for 40. He has had at least two hits in eight of the 10 games.
The Dragons have scored at least six runs in six of their last seven games. They are batting .377 with men in scoring position over the last six contests.
The Dragons meet the Whitecaps on Monday at 1:00 p.m. (WONE 980 AM) as Dayton tries for their first three-game winning streak of 2012. Jacob Johnson (0-0, 0.90) will start for Dayton against West Michigan's Wilsen Palacios (4-3, 4.47). The series concludes Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. The Dragons next home game is Wednesday, May 30 vs. South Bend at 7:00 p.m.
