River Bandits Split Doubleheader with Kernels

Quad Cities gave up an early lead in the first game of a twin bill at Cedar Rapids Sunday afternoon, with the Kernels coming back to win 11-10 in the bottom of the ninth inning in a scheduled seven-inning contest. The River Bandits rebounded to take the next game, 8-7 at Perfect Game Field at Veteran's Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

In the bottom of the ninth inning of the scheduled seventh inning opener, left-hander Danny Miranda (3-2) came out for his third inning of work for Quad Cities, despite blowing a save in the seventh when Kernels' right fielder Andy Workman singled to tie the game with two outs. Kevin Moesquit singled to lead off the inning and after Ryan Jones struck out swinging, Kaleb Cowart singled as well, putting men at first and second with one out for Frazier Hall. Hall then drove in the winning run with a line single to right field. Hall finished the afternoon 4-for-6 with a home run and three runs batted in.

The Kernels (23-27) scored one run in six different innings in the opener, but trailed Quad Cities (24-26) until scoring five runs in the bottom of the fourth off right-hander Tyrell Jenkins, who lasted only four innings, allowing eight runs, all of which were earned, on twelve hits, striking out two and walking one.

Colin Walsh went 3-for-5 for Quad Cities, with three runs batted in. Tyler Rahmatulla and Anthony Garcia both homered for the River Bandits, for their fourth and second home runs on the year, respectively.

Quad Cities overcame a five-run fourth inning by the Kernels in the second game, scoring in each of the last four innings to earn a split of the doubleheader with an 8-7 win.

With the River Bandits trailing 7-6 heading into their final at-bat, Virgil Hill singled to lead off the inning. With Hill on first, Rahmatulla executed a sacrifice bunt that pitcher Frank De Jiulio fielded, but threw the ball past first base, allowing Hill to advance to third with no outs. After Rahmatulla advanced to second on a Colin Walsh ground out, Anthony Garcia singled to center, driving in both runners and giving Quad Cities an 8-7 lead.

Right-hander Robert Stock started the nightcap for Quad Cities, his first professional start since being converted to a pitcher during Spring Training. Stock lasted 3 2/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits, two of which were home runs. He did not allow a run until the fourth inning when he allowed a double and two home runs, as part of a five-run inning. Right-hander Willy Paulino (2-3) came on with two outs in the inning and allowed a home run to Wendell Soto, which capped the five-run frame.

Colin Walsh hit his Midwest League-leading twelfth home run of the season in the sixth inning off Frank DeJiulio (1-1). He finished the day 4-for-9, with four runs batted in. He is now batting .512 against Cedar Rapids this season with three home runs and 14 RBI.

Monday Quad Cities and Cedar Rapids will play a Memorial Day game at 2:00 p.m. Left-hander Jonathan Cornelius (0-1) will start for Quad Cities and right-hander Jairo Diaz (2-4) will start for Cedar Rapids.
