Lake County Captains News Release


(LANSING, MI) - Shane Opitz hit an opposite field three- run homerun in the third inning. At the time, that made the score 5-0 Lanisng. The Lugnuts won the ballgame by a final of 10-1. Lanising scored runs in the first second and third innings. The homer was not only the first of the season for Opitz, but the first of his professional career. The Captains fall to 1-6 on Sunday's in 2012.

In the first inning, Lansing opened the scoring. Kenny Wilson doubled to left field and Kevin Pillar singled him to third. Andy Burns singled to left field and it was quickly 1-0 Lansing. The Lugnuts added a run in the second inning when Kenny Wilson lifted a sacrifice fly to left field and Markus Brisker scampered home to make the score 2-0 Lugnuts.

Lansing added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Kevin Pillar singled home Shane Opitz and the score was 6-0 Lugnuts. The Captains scored a run in the top of the seventh to get on the scoreboard. Jordan Smith singled with one out and then scored on Jerrud Sabourin's second double of the ballgame and it was a 6-1 game.

In the bottom of the seventh, Lansing scored three more runs to put the game out of reach. The Lugnuts used three straight hits from Opitz, Jon Berti, and Kenny Wilson en route to the three run inning. The score after seven innings was 9-1 Lansing. The Lugnuts tacked on another run in the bottom of the eighth when Kevin Patterson singled home K.C. Hobson who doubled to lead off the inning. Grant Sides allowed that run, the RBI by Patterson ended a 19.1 Scoreless inning streak by Sides.

RHP Jesse Hernandez (4-2) got the win for Lansing. Hernandez pitched seven innings allowing just one earned run on five hits with seven strikeouts. Hernandez's ERA now is under 2.00 and stands at 1.99. Blake McFarland entered the ball game in the eighth inning for Lansing.

LHP Shawn Morimando (1-1) took the loss for the Captains. Morimando went 3.0 IP allowing seven hits, 5 runs, four of which were earned. Morimando walked two and struck out two and surrendered the three run homer to Opitz. Mason Radeke pitched three innings allowing four hits, one earned run Mason allowed one walk and struck out three. Manny Carmona went 1.0 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K. Grant Sides extended his scoreless innings streak but also saw it come to an end. Sides retired the first hitter of the eighth but then surrendered a run after consecutive hits and the streak ended at 19.1 innings.

The Captains continue the road trip on Monday evening in Lansing, Michigan. The Captains will be playing Lugnuts for the second series of the season. Lansing took two out of three in Eastlake, Ohio. Monday, Lake County will start RHP Felix Sterling (2-3, 4.89) and the Lugnuts will counter with RHP Noah Syndergaard (3-0, 3.34). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
