
Kernels split wild DH with Quad Cities on Sunday

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - 21 runs, 32 hits, extra innings, and a walk-off Kernels winner. And that was just game one. The Kernels scored a run in the bottom of the 9th inning, in a game scheduled for seven innings, to edge the Quad Cities River Bandits 11-10. Every single starter for both teams reached base at least once in the game.
With the game tied 10-10 in the bottom of the 9th inning, Frazier Hall's RBI single scored Kevin Moesquit to give the Kernels the extra-inning walk-off win. Moesquit beat out an infield single to begin the inning. Hall's game winning hit concluded his stellar game. He went 4-6 with a home run, a double, and three runs batted in.
Quad Cities led 10-9 going into the bottom of the 7th inning, but Andy Workman's 2-out, game-tying RBI single scored Ryan Jones to send the game to extra innings.
Ty Kelley (3-0) got the win in relief for the Kernels. He pitched the top of the 9th inning, allowing no runs on one hit. Danny Miranda (3-2) was charged with the loss and a blown save for Quad Cities. He went 2.1 innings and allowed two runs on five hits.
The River Bandits hit a pair of 2-run home runs in the 1st inning, taking an early 4-0 lead. Tyler Rahmatulla and Anthony Garcia both hit 2-run shots off of Kernels starter Brian Diemer. Andy Workman's RBI single in the bottom of the 1st inning scored Ryan Jones to cut the Quad Cities lead to 4-1. Quad Cities extended their lead to 6-1 in the 2nd inning with Colin Walsh's 2-RBI single.
Kevin Moesquit's RBI single plated Trevor Hairgrove in the bottom of the 2nd inning, trimming the Bandits lead to 6-2. Quad Cities responded by putting two runs across in the 3rd inning, taking a 8-2 lead. Nick Martini's RBI single scored Roberto De La Cruz, and Colin Walsh drew a bases loaded walk to plate Virgil Hill.
Frazier Hall's solo home run in the 3rd inning cut the Quad Cities lead to 8-3. The Kernels then scored five runs in the 4th inning. Kaleb Cowart's RBI single scored Chevy Clarke. Frazier Hall's RBI double plated Ryan Jones. Andy Workman's RBI sacrifice fly plated Cowart to pull the Kernels within two runs. Abel Baker then launched his 2nd home run of the year over the wall in center field to tie game 8-8.
The Kernels took a 9-8 lead in the 5th inning on two Bandits errors. Kevin Moesquit reached on an error by shortstop Matt Williams to begin the inning. He later scored on a 2-out error by second baseman Colin Walsh. Frazier Hall bounced the ball to the second baseman, but it was bobbled by Walsh. Moesquit, who began the play at second base, scored to give the Kernels a 9-8 lead.
In the 6th inning, Quad Cities scored two runs on two Kernels errors to take a 10-9 lead. Anthony Garcia doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on a throwing error by Kernels catcher Abel Baker. David Medina walked and later came home on a missed popup by Kernels second baseman Kevin Moesquit off the bat of Juan Castillo.
Brian Diemer started for the Kernels and went 2.2 innings, allowing eight runs (six earned). Logan Odom allowed two runs (one earned) over 3.1 innings. Carmine Giardina pitched two scoreless innings. Tyrell Jenkins started for the Bandits and went four innings, allowing eight runs on 12 hits. Ethan Cole allowed one unearned run on one hit over two innings.
In game two, Quad Cities trimmed the Kernels 8-7. Quad Cities took a 1-0 lead in the 4th inning on Tyler Rahmatulla's RBI single that scored Virgil Hill.
However, the Kernels countered with their second 5-run 4th inning of the day. In the inning, the Kernels cracked out three home runs. Kaleb Cowart got things started with a solo blast to center, tying the game 1-1. Chevy Clarke's 3-run shot to right center gave the Kernels the 4-1 advantage as Trevor Hairgrove and Matt Scioscia also came home to score. Wendell Soto capped off the inning with a solo home run that snuck over the wall in straight away right field. Soto's 4th home run of the season gave the Kernels a 5-1 lead.
Quad Cities started to peck away with two runs in the 5th inning, trimming the Kernels lead to 5-3. Matt Williams drove home Nick Martini with a RBI single. Virgil Hill reached on an infield single, and Williams scored on pitching Mike Johnson's throwing error.
The Bandits scored three runs in the 6th inning, taking a 6-5 lead. Colin Walsh homered to cut the Kernels lead to one run. Neal Pritchard's 2-RBI doubled plated Roberto De La Cruz and Nick Martini to give Quad Cities the lead.
The Kernels scored two runs without a hit to retake a 7-6 in the bottom of the 6th inning. Chevy Clarke walked and scored on an error by Bandits catcher Juan Castillo. Carlos Lugo reached on an error by Bandits catcher Juan Castillo and scored on a RBI groundout by Kevin Moesquit.
The Bandits scored two runs in the 7th inning to take a 8-7 lead. Anthony Garcia's RBI singled scored both Virgil Hill and Tyler Rahmatulla.
Frank De Jiulio (1-1) went two innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits for the Kernels. Mike Johnson started and went five innings. He allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits over five innings.
Willy Paulino (2-3) got the win in relief. He went 2.1 innings for Quad Cities, allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits. Heath Wyatt picked up his 7th save, allowing no runs in one inning. Robert Stock started for the Bandits and went 3.2 innings. He allowed four runs on four hits.
