Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - A season-high-tying 18-hit barrage by the Lansing Lugnuts (35-14) backed a strong outing from Jesse Hernandez in 10-1 rout of the Lake County Captains (25-24) on Sunday afternoon at Cooley Law School Stadium.
With the win the Lugnuts avoid losing back-to-back games for just the second time this season and evened up the four-game series against the Captains at a game apiece.
Hernandez (Win 4-2) tied a career-high by throwing seven innings, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out seven and walking none.
It was the third consecutive start that Hernandez has thrown seven innings. In those three starts, Hernandez has thrown a combined 21 innings, allowing 13 hits, three runs and three walks while striking out ten batters.
Six Lugnuts recorded multi-hit games, four of which were three-hit performances. Shane Opitz led the way going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and a three-run home run. K.C. Hobson scored twice and smashed a double in the midst of a 3-for-5 showing, while Kevin Pillar and Jon Berti each notched three hits in five at-bats
Chris Schaeffer was the only Lugs starter who did not record a hit, though he did walk twice, was hit by a pitch, and scored two runs.
The Lugnuts offense touched up Captains starter Shawn Morimando (Loss, 1-1), who gave up a season-high five runs and seven hits in a season-low three inning of work.
Blake McFarland nailed down the victory with a scoreless eighth and ninth to extend his scoreless streak to 11 innings.
The Lugs continue their seven-game homestand with the Lake County Captains in the third game of a four-game series at Cooley Law School Stadium on Monday, May 28th. Right-hander Noah Syndergaard (3-0, 3.34) starts for Lansing at 7:05 p.m., opposed by Lake County righty Felix Sterling (2-3, 4.89).
Tickets are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
