Boise Hawks News Release

The Boise Hawks (18-14) fell to the Hillsboro Hops (22-10) on Tuesday night by a final score of 6-5 in 10 innings. The Hawks led the entire game before Hillsboro scored three runs, with two outs, in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game. Hillsboro then scored three times in extra-innings to win the game.

After both teams threatened in the first inning by getting runners to third base, the Hawks got on the board first in the 2nd inning. After a single for Luke Morgan, it was Willie MacIver in a hit-and-run situation with a single to right field. Daniel Jipping came up with runners on the corners, and on a fielders choice, Morgan scored from 3rd base to give Boise a 1-0 lead.

Jipping added to the Boise lead in the 4th. After Danny Edgeworth singled, Luke Morgan bunted for a hit and Edgeworth wheeled all the way around to third-base. Morgan than stole second base and Jipping slapped a single into leftfield scoring both runners making it 3-0 Hawks.

Boise starter Pearson McMahan worked his way through trouble all night. In the 2nd, McMahan allowed a single and double to start the inning. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, the righty came back and got three strikeouts to get out of the jam.

After McMahan went six innings of shutout baseball with six strikeouts, Mike Bunal worked his way through the 7th inning. After he loaded the bases, Bunal got a strikeout to end the frame. Boby Johnson worked a perfect 8th inning with two strikeouts.

With Boise leading 3-0 in the 9th, the chaos ensued. After Eric Hepple got the first two outs of the inning, Keshawn Lynch hit a high pop-fly to right field and it dropped between Cole Anderson the right fielder, Terrin Vavra the second-baseman and Matt Hearn the center-fielder. Lynch got to second for a double and Andy Yerzy got a single, scoring Lynch, to make it a 3-1 game. After Yerzy, Joey Rose hit a two-out home run to tie the game up at three.

Hepple got the final out of the 9th. In the 10th inning, Boise started the frame off with a runner on second because of the new extra-inning format, it was Cole Anderson. The Hawks got a walk from Matt Hearn and a wild pitch allowed Anderson to reach third-base. Hearn stole second with Terrin Vavra in the box. Vavra then singled to right, scoring two runs and the Hawks had a 5-3 lead.

In the bottom of the 10th, Colton Pate came into the game with the runner on second for Hillsboro. Pate hit Jake McCarthy to put a man on first-base and when Ryan Tufts laid down a sacrifice bunt, Pate came off the mound and threw the ball past Terrin Vavra who was covering the bag on the sacrifice attempt. A run scored making it 5-4 and Hillsboro had runners on second and third base. After an intentional walk to Ryan January, Jorge Perez singled up the middle scoring two runs and getting the win for Hillsboro at 6-5 after 10 innings.

The Hops now have a four game lead over Boise in the Northwest League South with just six games to play for the first half title. Boise returns to Ron Tonkin Field tomorrow for a 2:05 MT start in the final game of the series.

The Hawks return home on Thursday, July 19th at 7:15 p.m. It will be Thirsty Thursday presented by Coors Light as Boise begins a five-game series with the Everett AquaSox. Get your tickets at BoiseHawks.com or call 208-322-5000.
