Boise Hawks News Release

The Boise Hawks (19-14) won their 5th straight series thanks to an extra-innings victory over the Hillsboro Hops (22-11) by the final score of 4-2. Luis Castro hit a solo home run to tie the game at two in the 9th and Boise tacked on two runs in the top of the 10th.

The Hawks got their first run of the game in the 3rd inning. It was Luis Castro with a sacrifice fly scoring Matt Hearn from 3rd base making it 1-0 Hawks. But in the bottom of the 3rd inning, with Tra Holmes on third base for Hillsboro, Ryan Dobson hit a groundball to the shortstop Terrin Vavra scoring the run from 3rd base. The game was tied at one.

Boise starter Nick Bush gave the Hawks four innings of one run baseball before Joel Condreay threw a scoreless 5th inning. Shelby Lackey then worked the next two innings facing the minimum to keep the score tied at one going to the 8th.

Hillsboro added a run in the 8th. Jose Caballero hit a single to leftfield and Aubrey McCarty bobbled it and Caballero took off to try and stretch it into two bases. The throw was wide of second baseman Jeff Bohling . Andy Yerzy came up and gave Hillsboro a 2-1 lead with a single scoring Caballero.

In the top of the 9th, Castro led the inning off with a solo home run, his 5th of the season, tying the game at two. Peyton Gray came into the game for Boise in the bottom of the inning and got a three-up, three-down frame and for the 2nd day in a row. We went to extra-innings.

With Daniel Jipping on 2nd base to start the 10th because of the new extra inning rules which put the last batter who was retired in the previous inning on 2nd base, Aubrey McCarty doubled down the leftfield line. The Hawks took a 3-2 lead. Hidekel Gonzalez then smacked one down the right field line to score McCarty despite being thrown out trying to leg-out a triple. Boise led 4-2.

PJ Poulin worked the 9th inning, and after a huge first out to throw out Jorge Perez trying to steal third base, Poulin left the go ahead-run in the batters box by getting three outs. Hillsboro left runners on first and second to end the game. Poulin has not allowed a run this year in 11.1 innings-pitched.

Boise's Matt Hearn extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a 1-3 day. Luis Castro goes 2-3 with two-RBI.

The Hawks return home tomorrow, Thursday, July 19th at 7:15 p.m. It will be Thirsty Thursday presented by Coors Light as Boise begins a five-game series with the Everett AquaSox. Get your tickets at BoiseHawks.com or call 208-322-5000.
