Portland Winterhawks News Release

Swift Current, Sask. - Goals from Josh Davies, Josh Zakreski and Nick Johnson helped the Winterhawks earn a point for the second straight game, but the Swift Current Broncos grabbed the deciding tally in a five-round shootout to take a 4-3 win on Friday.

Rylan Gould grabbed the winning goal in the breakaway contest, while Reid Dyck stopped four of five Portland skaters on top of a 29-save showing in regulation time.

A back-and-forth first frame saw both teams score twice at the outset. Portland grabbed early momentum just 33 seconds into the contest as Davies burned his former team with a rip from the right circle. Davies, playing his first game back in Swift Current after being acquired by Portland in August, has scored in three consecutive games. Swift Current quickly responded, though, on Josh Filmon's fifth of the year three minutes later. Luke Mistelbacher then gave the hosts a 2-1 lead at 16:41, but Zakreski knotted things up at two at 17:20 with a toe-drag wrister from the slot.

The Hawks broke the deadlock midway through the second as Luca Cagnoni found Johnson with a spinaround pass through the crease, and Portland's #93 made no mistake. But the Broncos again pushed back and found a tying tally early in the third period as Brady Birnie bounced a wraparound off Jan Špunar's skate.

In overtime, both teams received a power play opportunity, and it appeared that Portland may have won the game on a Gabe Klassen breakaway, but his collision with Dyck caused the officials to wave off the potential game-winner.

The Winterhawks are back in action tomorrow night from Enmax Centre in Lethbridge at 5:00 P.M. Pacific Time.
