Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
The Brandon Wheat Kings and Regina Pats played the first of three games over a nine-day stretch on Friday, November 3. The Pats took first blood in the mini-series, and the Wheat Kings will be glad of a chance at redemption after a tough first outing.
Borya Valis and Sam Oremba scored twice, and Ewan Huet made 33 saves as the Wheat Kings fell 6-1 to the Pats. Quinn Mantei scored the lone goal for Brandon, who surrender six goals to Regina for the second straight meeting between the two.
"We gave up a couple early," said head coach and GM Marty Murray. "But I thought the back breaker was the fourth one. I didn't hate our game. We gave up some quality chances in the first, but I thought the fourth one was the back breaker.
It didn't take long for the game to head the wrong direction. Oremba had a fortunate bounce off the skate of the referee just 1:40 into the first and went in alone, finishing five-hole to make it 1-0. Three minutes later, Valis finished five-hole from the right cirlcle on a two-on-one.
The third goal came with Zane Rowan left alone in the slot, finishing high-glove. Then, into the second, the offensive role continued. The aforementioned back breaker came when Parker Berge came over the line and sent an unscreened shot home from just outside the right circles.
The Pats weren't done, as Valis and Oremba each had one more in them to make it 6-0, with Valis scoring his in memorable fashion as he chopped it home while being tripped up and drawing a penalty. He then went on to set up Oremba for his second.
The third period was much better for the Wheat Kings, as they outshot the Pats 14-2 in the final frame. They managed to break Huet's shutout too, with Mantei finding a seem on the power play and sending the puck through traffic to get the Wheat Kings on the board.
Tempers flared late, and these two teams will have plenty of time to settle any scores as they meet twice more in the next eight days. But before that, the Wheat Kings travel to Moose Jaw to face the Warriors on November 9. Puck drop is 8:00 Central Time.
