The Story:
Scoring in all three periods, the Winterhawks pushed their point streak to three games (2-0-1) with 3-1 victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Saturday night.
The Winterhawks move to 10-4-0-1 with the win.
A dominant first period from Portland saw the team outshoot Lethbridge 14-0 and take a 1-0 lead on Jack O'Brien's fifth of the year. The 20-year-old alternate captain was the first to a Gabe Klassen rebound and wired a shot from the right circle at 15:15.
Lethbridge upped their pressure in the second period, but it was the Winterhawks notching the next goal on a Marek Alscher breakaway at 8:13. The Czech defenseman came out of the penalty box, collected a loose puck in the defensive zone and blazed past a Hurricanes' defender before tucking the puck past the outstretched pad of Harrison Meneghin. The hosts got on the board five minutes later as Kooper Gizowski tapped home a rebound chance, sending the teams to the second break with the same deficit as the first.
Any comeback bid was snuffed out in the third by a stout Portland defense and a dialed-in Jan Špunar, who finished with 22 of 23 saves in the win. James Stefan put the game on ice with an empty-netter in the closing moments of play for a 3-1 victory.
Portland's trek through the Central Division is now concluded, but the road trip continues through Kamloops and Vancouver on Wednesday and Friday next week.
