Hawks Battle Hard, Fall in OT to Lethbridge 4-3

The Portland Winter Hawks battled hard to force overtime but would up losing to the Lethbridge Hurricanes on a power play goal by Luca Sbisa by a margin of 4-3 on Wednesday night at the Memorial Coliseum.

Sbisa and Colton Sceviour both had one goal and two assists for Lethbridge while Zach Boychuk and Austin Fyten chipped in individual goals for the Hurricanes.

Portland fell behind in the first period but tied the score in the last second of the opening frame when Chris Francis took a cross-ice pass from Luke Walker at buried a shot just as time expired in the period on a two-man advantage. Travis Ehrhardt also assisted on the play.

Lethbridge would take a 2-1 lead on a power play goal by Boychuk early in the second period, but again Portland would rally with a late two-man advantage goal. Colin Reddin deflected in an Ehrhardt entry shot to tie the game heading into the second intermission.

Portland took their only lead in the game when Joel Ridgeway took a feed from Brad Ross and beat Lethbridge goaltender Juha Metsola with a wrist shot from the top of the circles early in the third period. Lethbridge would tie the score just under two minutes later to force the overtime period.

Kurtis Mucha started in net for Portland and stopped 4 of 6 shots in just under 24 minutes before giving way to Ian Curtis, who stopped 22 of 24 shots as Lethbridge fired 30 shots at the Portland net. Metsola made 30 saves on 33 shots for Lethbridge as Portland outshot their opponents for the second straight game.

One special teams, Portland scored 2 goals on 10 power play chances while killing 4 of 7 power play chances against.

Next up, the Hawks host the Tri City Americans at the Rose Garden on Friday night at 7:30.
