Lancaster Stormers News Release
Ryan Harvey drove in all five runs, and John Halama won his fifth consecutive start as the Lancaster Barnstormers opened a three-game series at TD Bank Park with a 5-3 victory Friday evening.
Lancaster now needs only six more victories to set the Atlantic League wins record. The club is 81-44 on the year and holds a 4 1/2 game lead over the York Revolution in the Freedom Division.
The Barnstormers offense again struggled, but Harvey came through twice. In the first, Gilberto Mejia reached on a single to the hole at shortstop, and Fehlandt Lentini's grounder to third was misplayed by Jeff Nettles. Blake Gailen was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Harvey brought two home with a ground single through the right side, despite breaking his bat on the swing.
With one out in the fifth, the same trio loaded the bases again. Mejia drew a walk from Doug Arguello (6-7). Lentini pounded a ground rule double to left center, and Gailen was again plunked to load the sacks. Harvey roped a double over the head of center fielder Jonny Tucker, scoring all three runners for a 5-2 lead.
Halama (13-7) had one brief lapse over his seven-inning stint. Jesse Hoorelbeke lined a double that cleared Lentini's head in left, and Corey Smith banged a homer on the same trajectory to start the fourth inning. Otherwise, Somerset managed only six singles off the lefty, just two of which got to the outfield. Halama walked one and struck out two while winning his fifth straight start.
Jeff Bennett hit Hoorelbeke to open the eighth but got a double play and a strikeout to hold the lead. Tim Hamulack hit Johnny Drennen to lead off the ninth. The Barnstormers barely missed turning a double play on Freddie Bynum that would have ended the game. A walk to Tucker and single up the middle by Colin Curtis produced one run, but Yunesky Sanchez ended an 11-game hitting streak by grounding to third to end the night. Hamulack recorded his 29th save of the year and 22nd in a row.
Lancaster will send J.D. Durbin (12-9) to the mound tomorrow night against right-hander Carlton Smith (3-3), who will be making a spot start for the Patriots. Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app beginning at 6:45.
